Lil Satan fuel pickup placement
« on: June 04, 2010, 07:46:42 PM »
My Lil Satan is a Carl Goldberg kit. I still have the original plans and needed them many of times. I'm not sure how the plans are drawn in the Brodak version. The plans are drawn in full size and had a speed chart located at the bottom of the drawings. As I stated in the post Jamie started (Two Thumbs Up ) I can't seem to locate the pickup tube correctly. I wish I could scan these plans and post them. First off the drawing depicts the cylinder and needle valve on the outboard side. This seems pretty typical until, you try and do it. Its quite obvious you want nothing projecting high or low from the wing as it would get damaged in landing. I've actually pulled a vent pipe out of the tank on a hard landing when it bent. The problem occurs due to the firewall having the engine backplate mounted in a horizontal fashion. The plan shows the pickup mounted to the right side and its about 5/16 off the backplate. In a standard profile model the pickup is located right onto the backplate. I'm assuming this is due to the extreme offset that the firewall is mounted. The fuel is not actually going to the back of the tank rather the middle of closer to the front. The plans make this installation look simple and easy (It always looks good on paper) except I've tried this in every imaginable way. All I can say is I just don't know how I got this to work as a kid because I sure can't seem to do it now. I guess its the more you know theory. The plans also don't show the venturi running down the center of the tank. I guess for clarity reasons it was omitted. Now that the plan shows the pickup off the backplate, where should it be in relation to level when the plane is held in the level position. I would think  that it should be centered within the tank up and down. I generally position them on profile models with the pickup located on the outboard lower corner. I have one other problem with the drawings. The plane shows 4 illustrations of the engine mounted to the plane. Three of the drawing show the engine with the stunt tank pipes mounted horizontally. One of the pictures show the pipes vertically. The three pictures with the horizontal pipes are the ones I'm questioning. The full size pic shows the pickup above the pipes in the top view. This is possible excpet that would mean the pipes would have to be installed below the centerline of the engine. This would then mean the fuel would be running out of the tank during startup. I'm well aware that the plane could be started wing tip up. I'm just making a point. The side views of the engine installation shows these pipes mounted horizontally except the pipes are above the centerline. Its quite obvious that the drawings are incorrect. What is the correct installation of these pipes. This leaves the last drawing with the pipes mounted vertically and the pipes are located on the inboard side leaving the outboard side for the pickup tube. I would really like to get this working so I'm open to all suggestions. Ken Cook

I also posted this in the 2 thumbs up thread.  The correct way to set up the engine is with the needle to the inboard, the cylinder outboard and the vents horizontal above the centerline.  You have to fill the tank with the engine on it's wingtip.  With this setup, the fuel hose goes to what was previously the bottom of the tank and there is no difficulty in doing that.

As mentioned in other threads, the best fuel pickups are aluminum tube bent to go where you want and connected to the pickup nipple with a short length of fuel hose.  This takes up way less volume in the tank, and will never wander out of place.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

The other option would be a separate tank (balloon or wedge) in the wing and drill out metal Cox tank for fuel line hook up or extend nose and use a sure start backplate set up..

Victor, that always a possibility and not a bad one. The integral tank Cox engines can be a handful at times. I've used these engines for over 30 years and still have fits with them. Its just puzzling to me that years back they seemed so flawless. I'm sure various factors are at work here, but I just don't recall having so many engine run problems. Nowadays, I test for air leaks , replace all the gaskets, in addition I polish the parts. Remember when you only received 1 venturi o-ring and the only way to purchase another was buying an entire overhaul kit. Today we can purchase multiple gaskets and o-rings by the bulk. I don't remember the 2-56 tank screws being available in stainless as well. I also ran glow plugs until they didn't glow anymore. Having all these items and new parts available I really shouldn't be having any engine run issues. One thing I did have on this engine was a tank to backplate leak. I tried to lap the tank to the tankback but was semi-successful. I used a piece of dental floss in the v-groove which if you ever want to test your patience, try installing a piece of it. It did work and very well I may add. I will try the method that Larry suggested then its going to get a tank. I can honestly say I've nothing but good luck using the Sure Starts and a Perfect tank.
