Off the wall thought here...
« on: October 17, 2011, 01:57:39 AM »
I often look over the items that are sold throught hobby king and They have a model I think might make an interesting project.
Its a a10 with edfs and while this is a rather small model. I'm wonderng if it would work as a 1/2A control line project.
Anybody here have any cluse on these small ducted fan models and just what Kind of power they may have ??

I beleive it comes with the electric ducted fan motors installed.   Get Clancy's electric set up and go for it.  I have even thought of it myself for control line fun scale. H^^

I did a search on "Clancy" and got nothing.  What are you referring to?

This guy:

http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?board=39.0

Ducted fan engines tend to be "constant thrust" devices.  Where a prop will give you more thrust at low speeds (and load the motor down), a ducted fan won't.  Put a big enough prop on something, at a low enough pitch, and it'll be very like a "constant speed" device -- which is nice for CLPA.  You won't get that from a ducted fan.

So I suspect that you'll want a really smooth (probably paved) surface to take off from, and you'll want to expect a long takeoff roll.  Once you get airborne, assuming enough power, it should go like a bat out of Hell.  Why the bats in Michigan's upper peninsula are so fast -- I dunno.  I'm just repeating the cliché: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell,_Michigan.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

I use the universal handle concept on models from 1/2A to .60 size. The concept is described here http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=15377.0
My handle is an electified version of the classic 3-line handle. All the U/tronics components, including a battery are in the handle.
