Go to the electric section or PM Dennis Adimisin.

Go over to the "Getting all amp'd up" forum and look in the "List Your Setup" thread -- there are some 1/2-A sized planes in there.  Keep in mind that for a trainer you don't need as much power, and may not want it.

Do a search on "ET-1".  You'll find a Coreplast trainer designed by Larry Reniger.  The recommended power system for that should power the Skyray just fine.

For the Viper, weigh it, then let us know.

I built a pair of ET-1's for my nephews for Christmas in 2012.  I took Larry's recommendation to use a radio for throttle.  It works great, for a beginner it lets you cut throttle when they're getting bored, dizzy, or into trouble, and for a plane that can only go around in circles it adds a dimension of fun.  All the electronic stuff for a plane was about $70 from Hobby King, including extra batteries and a charger.  The more you already have, the lower the price.

I'd get cheap motors -- he'll be using them for landing gear a lot, so you'll be replacing them.

I fly my Skyray with a Turnigy 2730-1700Kv , 500 mah 3s , Brodak timer and 12 amp esc,  Every bit as good as a COX will do all stunts that a Skyray can do.

You can get it way cheaper at Hobby King.  It'll be cheaper in all senses, not just "less money", but for a trainer that's going to be crashed anyway, why not?

Yea I have a bunch of electric R/C stuff anyway so I know the savings potential from Hobbyking/CopyKing so I'll just go that route.  I just don't understand all the #'s you see when looking at electric motors...Wish Hobbyking would list them like the $170 setup website.  "This electric motor is replacement for .61-.76 glow motor"  So thats what I need to know.  What motor's and such.  The skyray setup above I will pry just copy for my skyray since he said its comparable to cox .049 but my Hyper Viper could use .061 power.  So need a turnigy motor for it that would be a little more than the skyray one.

I can see how it would get confusing.  A good part of my living is designing motor drive circuits as well as control systems that use them, so sizing motors and electronics is a practiced art here.  Even though I know it in and out, it's still a tedious job to find all the right bits and pieces, particularly when you have to add a bit of distrust in the specifications into the mix.
