This series of contests allows and encourages PROXY FLYING for absent contestants. While rarely seen in most contests, but it's accepted practice on the hollow log circuit.

I had my first first-hand experience with the idea this Saturday in Kalamazoo. Some of the other contestants and spectators might not have understood what was going on.

Currell Pattie is one of the top hollew loggers, both in Michigan and in Virgina. He had a medial issue Friday night, which fortunately blew over. He asked me to campaign his entries as well as my own. This brought my event-count up from five to ten entries, while at the same time losing Currell's help on my stuff.

Fortunately, my long-time friend, Dan Miles stepped up to help pit and fly for Currell and myself, with very successfull results.

This business of proxy flying helps the hollow log fraternity keep the Musciano legend alive by building up the entry level. It depends heavily on the honor system to keep the practice to legitimate absentees, and not just a way to enter more models under assumed names.

The well-documented Vickers Wellsley was withdrawn from the Unlimited Muscain event due to a loose engine mount. Thge event was won by Rich Kachmarski with his new double-size Gulfhawk.

Thanks for the news and the pictures!

I am glad the medical issue blew over. I hope there will be more pictures and comments regarding this particular event.

Was there coverage that may appear in one of the magazines?

Maybe I shoulda sent my Autogiro to this event, Frank coulda flown it for me...my rotors turn too.

He was over to my house just now. He's in fine shape again. Picking up his trophies and what's left of his planes.

He's going to "the logger" in Virginia in September. Maybe some of us might want him to enter some planes (and autogiros).

HI Paul,

Is the Wellesly the big Fox 35 size one? I have always wonder how this one would fly as a Classic entry. No flaps and a high aspect ration wing.

I am trying to find time to build an F-7 Cutlass for the Virginia meet in the "scale" class........ or maybe the TBF.

This particular Wellsley had a 15, or maybe just an 09, I couldn't see with the cowl. Wingspan is over 36", but it's high aspect. In the "unlimited Musciano" events, you don't need to stunt. It's just apperance plus a token flight.

You don't have be ill to send in a proxy entry. Being out of town is OK, too. I've heard, but never witnessed, that models are mailed in to these events.

Really enjoyed having Currell'a airplanes at the contest. It was a little unnerving for the our judges they just couldn't figure out who's airplane was flying when.

I'm glad to hear Currell is doing fine. He emailed me and asked for details about the event.
Ray you should have sent your Auto Gyro, that way I could prove that with the rotors turning it would be slower than my P47. Frank was just a few seconds faster than I was, and I'm sure it is because his rotors were not turning.

I thought you were just laying off in Speed to let the customer win. If you wanted help in the engine room, I could have "proxied" something for you.

Yup, you can just about hover mine with a little "up"--rotor picks up speed, airplane loses it. I think the wing stalls, but the rotor holds it up. Then when you drop the nose, the rotor nearly stops but the wing starts lifting again. Kinda cute, really. A little unnerving the first time, though...

Glad to hear that Currell is doing well, and hope by now he is fully recovered.

Always heard that the Musciano events are kept low key. Now you're telling me that there is not even a "Flyer of the model" rule.

So who cares about who is flying the entries? Aren't the judges supposed to be judging the airplane? Maybe I will get one together and ship it to Paul for next years event. Also tell Currell to stay well as I may ask him to fly my entry. Have fun, DOC Holliday

Doc I think it would be a good idea to send models to be proxy flown. And I'd like to designate Paul as the proxy pilot for all entries. Now if we could just get a couple dozen guys to enter by proxy.

You can't "just send 'em in". You have to bring 'em over to my house like my current client.

After that business in Stunt, I'm on double secret probation. He might decide to drop 'em off at your house next time.

Man, I am a little late in responding to this, and thanks to Paul for taking the shots, flying, etc.

A little on the Wellesley...Walt's 1952 book had a 28" Wellesley in it. I blew it up to 36". It has an .09 on it. The Wellesley was used in the early days of WW 2 vs the Italians. It was pretty much obsolete for the war.

Walt also had the previously mentioned 35 sized Wellesley presented in a 1957 Model Airplane News. This one is a traditional stunter, built up wing of course.
