Pair of Baby Ringmasters
« on: November 19, 2023, 06:49:16 PM »
For the recent Ringmaster Flyathon, I built a pair of Baby Ringmasters for my son and I to fly. This would be his first model (yeah, kinda crazy choice in hindsight) and my first CL model in probably 15 years.

I started by tile printing the plans off the Outerzone website. I printed a couple sets so I could use a set for templates. I then stack cut all my parts (for two builds) on my jigsaw and finish sanded them.

From there, I was able to frame up the first one very quickly. The second build was a little quicker as I'd just finished one. At that point, I had two framed up and finish sanded in two nights of work.

Next up, I moved to covering and finishing. I've always been more of a film covering guy, so these were covered with partial rolls of Monokote I've got left in my stash.
This also seemed more appropriate for the abuse they are going to see.
In all, I had them ready to fly in 5 nights building after work (excepting a little time for soccer practice).
Power came from a Cox TD.049 and a Medallion. Both fed by 1/2oz tanks.

We made it to the flyathon and had a great time. Though it was pretty windy, we got a bunch of flights in on both planes.
I have them on 35ft spectra right now, but want to try them on 40-42ft as well.
My buddy Lester had the honor of the maiden flight on the purple/silver plane.
Finished weight was about 6.5ozs for each.

Nice! I especially like the Purple Pilot Eater! The Medallion is an excellent choice for a very capable plane. Hope you get lots of flights out of your "one-week miracles...."

That takes me back in time.  As kids, we had a blast with those Baby Ringmasters, Baby Flight Streaks, Lil Jumpin' Bean, etc.  Cox Golden Bee, a pint of fuel, and spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon having a good time.

Very nice builds! I suspect they flew good, too.

Is that translucent purple covering "Ultra Coat"?

Jim, I had always wanted a Jumping Bean!

Andre, it might be Ultracote or Monocote, I don’t remember which.
