New Project - Tech Terror
« on: July 07, 2007, 11:48:33 AM »
Many moons ago, as part of my senior thesis in college, I designed a 1/2A stunt model to verify a theoretical analysis on stability.  A few days ago, while cleaning my office, I found a copy of the project.  The report has pretty good drawings to scale of the plane.  As it is the only Classic Legal design of mine of which I have record, I am in the midst of doing formal plans in Autocad.  Kind of ugly, but what the heck, it will be a kick to fly my own design at VSC!!!   #^

The plane has 25" wingspan and 137 sq.in. area.  Power was a Golden Bee.  As you can see, it has a pretty good tail moment.  My report stated that as built it was tailheavy, so I am lightening the structure compared to what I expect I did then.  Of course now, I know a lot more about trim, and am adding adjustable leadouts and weight box.  I hope to bring it in at about 5.5 ounces (or less!).

More as it develops!

Looks like the original K.I.S.S.!  What's with the 2-piece rudder?

Don't have any drawings of my early planes, probably just as well.

The project required flying the model from a pylon with a movie camera on top.  Since there was nobody in the circle, it seemed that lots of vertical tail and rudder deflection would aid line tension.  Needless to say, the deflection will be minimal on a new version, though I can't change the 3-view and meet the Classic rules.

I plan to put an auxiliary tank inside the fuselage and use it and the engine tank in an attempt to fly the whole pattern.

  • I may not always BOM- but I do the re-builds!

Hey Larry- how do you mount the gear between the crankcase and the tank- or is that a sign of too much coffee / too little sleep while trying to finish your thesis?

The extra tank you propose to allow suffcient run time for the pattern should help out with the tail heavy issue- at least while it is full!

Just having a bit of fun on a sweltering Monday morning- what year would the design be dating back too- late 60's?

Yeah, that gear mount as shown would be quite a trick.

I imagine the intent was to mount it between the back of the backplate and the firewall.   Surely.

So, ya gonna build one?

I can't recall exactly how the gear was mounted, but I probably bent the wire into a clip that snapped over the crankcase just between the cylinder and tank.  In the current design, it is mounted in the firewall.  Hopefully, nobody will complain.

Yes, I plan to build one of these and fly it at VSC next year!  The plans are now complete in CAD form, and in the capable hands of Eric Rule.  As soon as I compete two other projects, this baby goes on the board.
