New built-up 1/4A
« on: June 16, 2007, 12:41:46 AM »
Here's my most "serious" plane yet for the .020 class--no name, 'til I see how it flies.  18" span as it sits, tips will be 1.5" so final span = 21", around 100 sq. in. area, as of this moment the frame weighs right at one ounce. One ounce of engine, one ounce of incidentals (covering, wheels, tank, paint) and we'll be set at 3 oz. max.  For my backyard of course.

Someone was asking about my sewn hinges.  Last pic is a closeup.  Standard sewing thread and needle, figure eights. Light and tight.  What more could a guy ask?

Progress report--just about RTC.  21" span, 100 sq. in., weight 2.4 oz. as it sits. I think 3 oz. finished weight is likely.

Final picture is an "up close" of the tank/engine/gear mounting, in case anyone's curious.

Progress photos...got the wings covered.  Material is "21st Century Coverite Microlite", .6 oz./sq. yd., that's 6/10ths of an ounce!  Added virtually no detectable weight on my postal scale, still at 2.4 oz. According to my calculations it should have added 1/10th ounce (100 sq. inches twice), guess my scale is a little inaccurate.

Ready for paint!

Finished product...Ralph, I found a pic of a Chizler, you're right, I could almost call it a "baby Chizler"!

21" span, 3 1/2 oz., 100 sq. in. wing.

Covered with Microlite, really nice stuff for these baby airplanes, weighs almost nothing, goes on very easily and neatly, just kinda fragile since it's so thin. Sure shrinks up nice.

PeeWee .020 for power.  These are pre-flight pics, hasn't been in the air yet.
