New Build Scale P51 (Finished)
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:26:45 PM »
Well, since the Confederate was a lost cause, I decided why not a scale Mustang?  This is the "Miss April" (named after my wife).  Its not finished, need to do the cowling, and finish the landing gear, and A LOT of sanding,  but I think its turning out pretty good.  Should have done it as a flapped plane, but never made a flapped CL model so I had no idea where to start.  The 3 view I got the measurements off of is below as well.  This plane has a 30" span and I got that by blowing up the 3 view 667% if anybody is interested.

Rudder and Elevator are stick built with 1/32 coverings.  Power is going to be an 061 wasp, but I left room in the engine compartment if that is not enough.

Thanks Bill,

Really been taking my time with it.  I knew what the outside would look like, but the guts were another story.  Have had several times during the build that I thought something would work, only to find out after I cut the parts that it would not.  My scrap pile is growing in leaps and bounds.   n~

My 7 year old doesn't want me to fly it, says it would look better hanging in his room than turned into toothpicks on the schoolyard.  That reminds me, he hasn't had a good beating in a while......

It looks like it will come out real good.  Good luck with it!

If you can get away one weekend and the weather's nice, you will have to come down here and we'll burn some fuel!

That looks really good...What's the projected weight?  Weight, as is?  Wing area?

Looks nice. i'd be concrned with weight. You might have cut the leading edge sheeting  down to about 3/4" , or will itbe totally sheeted ?

Not sure on current weight, hoping for around 12-14 oz.  I know thats heavy, but I also know my .061 will fly it.  The twin I built weighed in at 19 oz fueled and it would fly with only one engine so I'm pretty sure this one will too.  I may cut back the LE covering, my orig plan was to sheet it, but I've decided not to now.

If its too heavy, I can always cut holes in it, there are plenty of places, starting with the elevator and rudder since they are stick built.

You ever just want to kick yourself?  P51 almost done, just need to carve the cowling.  Took it out of the closet this morning to look at it (no place to set up for full build in small house) and proceeded to drop it on the inboard wing tip.  Cracked every rib, and even separated the LE and TE at the Dihedral.   Going to have to COMPLETELY REBUILD the inboard wing after I cut the bottom of the plane off so I can get it out. Why can't I just leave things alone?

Ewww sorry to hear that. Though i've had things like that happen also. In my move from an apt. alone to the rented room i'm in now I lost (2) guillows rubber models. due to the crunch monster. Fortunatlly my mini-stunts are unharmed. I hope to try flying sometime before the year ends.

My planes usually have more "Hanger Rash" than any thing else. And when I'm building my planes have at least one crash before they fly. HB~> LL~

Well, finished this up last night.  Final weight 13 oz.  Heavier than I wanted, but easily flyable from my experience.  Plus can save some weight by taking off the rubber wheels and putting lightweight ones on.  On 30 foot lines should not be an issue anyway.  Again, made to look good as opposed for stunt.

Finished Plane "Miss April" after my wife, whom I met in 1994 (tail #).  The T T represents my boys (Thomas and Tanner).
