Another question on the Mustang by Dick Sarpolus, What is the appropriate fuel tank for use with a Norvel 061?

HI Phillip,

From memory, I believe you need a tank around 1 oz. to possibly 1 1/2 oz. for the .061.  I am sure Brodak supplies the Perfect (brand name!) tank and possibly a plastic "R/C" clunk tank around that size.

It's been a while since I flew a Norvel, but the AP Wasp is essentially a clone.  1 ounce will do the job if you are running the APC 5.5x2.5 prop and 45 ft lines.  The Norvel may require just a bit more as the crank timing is "hotter".  Also, I run 10-10-10 fuel, higher nitro will need more capacity as would longer lines.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Is the Norvel a good engine?  Does it take a standard glow plug?  Or does it need a plug you can't get?

Are there different models? Or just 049, 061, CL & RC?

My NORVEL (Northern Velocity) engines run well. They had two types, the AME was for all-out performance and the Big Mig was easier handling. They were available in .049, .061, .07, .15, .25, and .40 (I don't have the .40).

The .049 and .061 used the same propietary plug, but the Cox glow head could be used, and they made conversion heads for 1/4"X32 standard plugs. I believe the AP head also fits.

The .07 used a propietary plug, the others used a standard plug.

These are now sold as NV engines. I do not (yet) have any of the new ones so I can't speak for them.

Some other glow plug options exist:

1) Doug Galbreath's replacement head, which takes a Nelson plug. (high compression)
2) Merlin makes a replacement head which uses their glow insert (similar to Norvel and AP head/insert) (high compression)
3) Jon Valentine Turbo plug head to use turbo glow plugs (high compression).
4) MECOA makes adapter head for regular glow plugs (low compression).

I am using the Merlin head on some Cox engines but plan to use on both Norvel's and AP's. You need to use more head shims with the Merlin setup since they are rather high compression. Lots of people use the Galbreath head and like it very much, though I have no experience with that.

You only need 7/8oz to do a full AMA pattern with a Norvel .061.  I like to use a Brodak 1oz tank and modify it with a uniflow vent directed to the air stream.
