FROGs & Logs
« on: March 03, 2009, 05:16:24 PM »
Warning! This is going to be a rambling post.

The picture should show my FROG .049. This
engine might be unfamiliar to Americans but it
is the English equivalent to an OK Cub. I've had
this one since I was a boy.

These engines were very common, but, (just
like the Cub) they were displaced by the Cox.
I find that everything being equal, it turns
200 rpm higher than my Cub.

Anyway, I've had a word with the Powers
That Be here in Canada, and they will allow
this engine to compete in the 2009 Musciano(s).
I don't think it's going to strike much fear into
the competition even with the gruesome frog decal
applied to the wing. It does say "Super Powered".
A warning to all!

The owner of our LHS dug into his dusty
drawers and found the vintage FROG decal
for me. I scanned it and made new water slide
decals using Testors inkjet paper.
It works!
The resulting decals are just slightly blurred
and mottled but 3pt reverse type is legible.
Good stuff.

I had an interesting experience at a R/C swap
meet this past weekend. This was a real R/C
club with lots of Giant Scale pattern planes
and huge 100cc + engines. You know what it
looked like.
Anyway, I found a Cox 0.49 and was carrying it
in my hand as I wandered from table to table.
Now this is the intersting part. At three separate
times, in the course of an hour, someone mentioned
Musciano contests to me. I was amazed!
I didn't think these guys knew what Controline was.
I wasn't wearing a controline T-shirt or hat. They
saw the Cox and immediately wanted to tell me
about the GSCB, the (Toronto) Balsa Beavers and
how they were planning to build a Musciano like
the one they had as a kid.
I have to conclude that there is huge pent up
interest in these little planes. Holy Cow!

Cheers!

Hello Currell!
I've been meaning to write to you
about what is happening with the logs up here.
As my previous post said, there seems to be a
underswell of interest in these planes.

I will be meeting with the Brass this week and
I'll see what I can promote. The proposed
Toronto Musciano is to be held in conjunction
with the LA.25 Sport Racing later in the summer.
I would like to see some more Musciano activity
earlier in the season and try to attract some
new competitors.
I'll keep you posted here at SH, but you can
always visit,

www.balsabeavers.ca

The Canadian Nationals will be held at Dresden
Ontario (near Detroit) August 21,22 & 23.
It's a full schedule but I plan on bringing a log
or two just for comic relief.

I went to another swap meet today,
the Aurora R/C Club. I didn't hear anyone mention
Muscianos but the guy selling some Cox
plastic ARFs was doing brisk business. (High $$$'s)
I arrived early and scored what's in the nearest
group of the picture, five engines for $25.00.
I have started the OK and it runs OK.
The Widow is limp but the other three are solid.
Lots of fun for the buck!

Cheers!
