Fox FAI .049 - anybody seen one?
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:08:31 AM »
This engine is specifically disallowed from the hollow log contests.

Does anybody have a pitcher of one?

I've never seen the engine, so what is an Event Director to look for?

The name "FAI .049" is a bit perplexing.

Here are two views taken from ebay.  This engine is up for auction.

Virginia Hobby Sport has them for $64.

Thanks.  It looks like the FAI engine can be "outed" by the larger front bearing on the crankcase.

It's interesting that Fox doesn't offer these anymore, but Virginia Sport does.  The price is $64 for either the strandard or the FAI model.  I guess if you wanted a powerful .049 at a good price (and didn't plan to enter a Musciano event), the FAI would be the engine of chioce.  They must be better than a Black Widow, else they wouldn't banned.

I take it you have to actually buy the encyclopdia, no free looks on line.

A few years ago, a couple of guys bought all remaining parts of the .049, FAI .049, and .07 from the Fox factory. When I bought mine (from Randall Hopkins), he was assembling and pre running them before shipment. He supplied running figures. Randall has since sold the company to another gent who is apparently wholesaling them.

Here are mine, Right one is .07 bought back when they were new (~57 or 58?), Left ones are FAI .049's with and without tank. Sorry, don't have the non-FAI .049's.

Pic is mine...feel free to copy it.

The Fox .049 FAI had the power out put similar to a Cox TD but it is not user friendly. When it ran it was a powerhouse but then it did not always like to run. The standard engine is easier to start and run. I think that the FAI is twin ported and the standard one is single ported. I use to run the FAI....when it was willing.

Another point to look for, for identification, is the exhaust port on the FAI is cut at an angle on the ends...
thanks

Years ago (1970's) the control line club at Purdue had a round the pole speed event for 049's.   There was a teather about 10 feet long of .015 or .018 cable and a really heavy anchor post.   They ran this indoors at the armory.   I used a Fox and kept up with all but the best of the TD's.   Someone by the name of Howard Rush usually won though.... did see one break the teather and punch through a cinderblock wall.   They were tiny about 12" span speed models and I think they hit speeds near 100 mph.

I have two new FAI's and a new Comet version. They look pretty good and seem decent. They are notalgia legal for FF.

Another easy way to tell is that the FAI has mounting holes in the lugs; the standard is radial-mount only.
