Cox Texaco, how do you recognise one?

The heading says it all! Assuming that no one has modified it, how do you recognise the Texaco? I want a lower revving Cox, so that the noise is not quite as bad as the normal 0.49. I expect to use an 8x4 prop. Young grandson seems scared of the higher revs and I would think that it would be a more docile set up.
What is the difference? is it simply a smaller venturi, or is there really no difference except for larger prop giving lower revs?

I know it has a taller head -- Wikipedia says it has 5 fins, which sounds right.

I'd be astonished if it had a two-bypass cylinder.

I doubt that the venturi was different -- Cox engines respond well to "throttle by propeller": put a honkin' big prop on there and it'll slow down.  It'll just get hot -- which is what the bigger head was all about.

Wikipedia says the tank is red, too, but finding a Cox engine that hasn't been mixed & matched these days is probably a rarity.

If you convert to diesel you can put a really big prop on there and diddle with the compression so it's happy.  It'll run slow and it'll smell better, too.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Texaco is a free flight event where were models are supposed to motor around slowly for a long time.  Fuel economy is at a premium.  I doubt if this engine will make you happy in the world of vol circular.

I believe the intake hole size is in fact smaller on the Texaco, something like 1/16".

1/16" is what size the intake hole is on all my reedies.  I think it's bigger on the black widow, though.

There is a good group on yahoo called 049 collectors. Lots of info on these small engines and big knowledge base of the members.

Black crankcase, red tank, 1/16" Venturi, 5 fin head.  It would be OK for a trainer, bunt would screw the poor kid into the ground with 5 minute flight time!

Cox did make a Jr. Texaco with the small tank.  That might be the ticket, and you don't have to fill it all the way!
