Cox reed valve tank back plate repair??
« on: March 12, 2009, 11:00:41 PM »
I have a few of the reed valve tank backs that have had holes drilled in them for external tank mods. Has anyone sucessfully repaired one with solder / silver solder / JB Weld / ???? I thought I'd ask before trying anything so i don't waste time or completely ruin a salvagable part.

Getting harder to find these back plates without broken mount ears or other damage- I'd like to save them if possible, my motto / handle  is "Fix-it" you know!

I haven't tried plugging a hole drilled in one, but can easily imagine JB weld would work just fine.  I've used it to repair crankcase cracks.

The ones that have the holes in them are .020 Pee-Wee tank backs, but thanks anyway Larry.

Have not every done it before but if it was me I would use a screw and a nut with the head inside and the nut outside. Pot it in place with JB weld.  Grind off most of the bolt and nut on the outside.  This may be over kill because JB weld may work on it own however with a screw it will be a strong fix.   Of course my problem is that I build em strong enough to withstand a crash and heavy enough to insure they will crass.

Bill,
I would suggest either J-B Weld or another epoxy. I would leave a little extra on the inside to add a little surface area to the joint.

I doubt that you can solder it effectively, but I have not tried it.

Good luck whatever you use...keep us posted.

Just bevel the hole inside and outside the tank back plate and use J-B Weld.  DOC Holliday

I mixed up some JB weld and had a go at it. Seems like it will be ok- but there is not a lot of material left after I re- did the counter bore for the screw head on the back slde. We will have to see if it holds up under that awesome Pee-Wee Power!!

I will have to agree with the JB Weld but I have a feeling soldering might work as well. I just don't have such equipment beyond a simple pencil iron.

uote by Bill Heher:
"I have a few of the reed valve tank backs that have had holes drilled in them for external tank mods."

I am actually saddened hearing this as just a few days ago I had the idea of drilling the backplate for just this purpose.
I had seen the tanks drilled and some skeletonized but had never seen a backplate so modified.

I really thought I had a new idea no one had done before. Actually the mod I have in mind doesen't completely ruin the backplate.
Before I unleash my idea on everyone, how has it done before?
My idea can also be used on the Baby Bee as well.

I'm dying to tell but first I must know what others have done so that I am not just repeating others efforts.

Here's what I did to my Peewee.

Also, I have a Black Widow stunt tank modified by bending the internal top vent tube in a "J"-shape, with fuel line running from it to the intake nipple...then an exterior tank plumbed to that top vent.  No damage to tank or backplate, integral tank bypassed. (Done to use bladder pressure.)

The one I repaired was drilled out through one of the lower screw holes, so that they could run a line in there and connect it to the fuel nipple.  A second one has a hole drilled below the air inlet screen,, I didn't fix that one because it has 2 mounting ears broken off.

I'll snap a few pics later and add them.

I do not drill holes in the backplate, I slot the tank to connect an external tank.

With 4 slots you can visually check that the line is still on the fuel line barb.
There is a balloon tank inside the 35MM film can.

I guess right now if I was going to use a reed valve cox with an external tank I would use a Surestart COX instead of cutting a hole in a Bee tank.  You can buy a sure start for under $20 on Ebay or you can buy 4 of them for $50. The glow plugs are worth that.  I rebuilt a couple of TDs with Surestart pistons and cylinders and they run great.  Anyway just a thought. The bee all in one piece may come in handy for a later project.

The Ebay link for 4 each is

I have always had a thing about drilling, boring, dremeling (is that a word?) or otherwise ruining a perfectly good Cox metal tank. If the tank had other problems first, Ok. Especially the gorgeous anodized tanks.

John, great suggestion so long as you mean .049 size engines but for the Pee Wee this option unfortunately, does not exist.

Back plates I view differently.
