Barry Baxter gave me this old Baby Ringmaster. The Japanese Tissue covering would only have interested an archaeologist interested in putting shards back together.  The controls needed much TLC. The main structure and paint were in good condition.

So, I wanted to try out covering with ModPoge using as the adhesive. After cutting away the old tissue and sanding the surfaces smooth, I put on a heavy coat of the glue/finish stuff.  The covering is my favorite for 1/2A, Coverlite. It ironed down just fine! 

The elevator was figure-eight re-hinged with Spectra thread.  Controls were freed up and adjusted to give 25 deg. up and down.

With the extended nose for a beam mounted engine, I had to add 1/4 ounce to the tail. The model now weighs 6.5 ounces and is powered by a PAW .5 cc diesel swinging a Rev-Up 6x3 prop. That is the same combo as Barry used. 

I need to put together lines and handle for it, probably 38 ft. of either Spectra or .008 wire.

Seriously Larry...  Mod-Podge?  Who (other than you) would even think of doing that.  Sounds like a good idea though.  Anything Someone can buy at the local Joanne's or Michaels rather than paying shipping and waiting for it.

So where DID you get the idea?

I have been using "Plaid Enterprises" brand Mod Podge, Matte finish. Whether there is a better brand, or the Gloss finish would work better, I haven't a clue! You guys tell me.  

I was put onto this stuff by Andy Borgogna.   Where he heard of it, I don't know, as a search of Stunt Hangar doesn't show up anything before my posts. I am flying with Andy this morning, so I'll ask him. (later: He says a scale model builder friend told him about it.)

Currently, I am working on a full size Ringmaster and doing 3 coats of 30% thinned Mod Podge with sanding between. The sanding kills off the raised fuzz that a water based paint causes and any lumps and bumps from uneven brushing. I bonded Carbon Veil to the fuselage with the stuff and that worked quite well. When I doped over the fiber, a spot or two came loose, but could be rubbed back down with finger pressure. Final result was just fine. I plan to iron down light weight Polyspan, then Microlite park flyer film over it.  Not as light as Coverlite alone, but WAY tougher and glossy. Overall, I hope for about a 15 point finish.

I don't know the tank size, but estimate 3/4 ounce. I guess I'll have to research that and get back to you.

Warren Walker has an old Perfect Tank vendor display in the Man Cave, and it does seem to be a 3/4 oz. tank, which should do a full pattern on a .5 cc. Diesel.

BTW,  the MAN CAVE menu tonight was pork ribs and spare ribs plus Paella, and home made brownies for dessert! About 20 people showed up after the Saturday session of the AMA Expo in Ontario.  Yum!
