AP Wasp C/L venturi
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:40:28 PM »
OK someone tell me again from whom to get custom venturis to replace the sorry carb. on an AP Wasp .061.

I know Jan Holuszko makes one but seems like there was another source also?  Can't find the right thread now.  I need email addresses, request from a customer. TIA

The other source is me, and Jan's was so much better, and done more easily with CAD/CAM that I dropped the project like a hot stone.  I use Jan's units now.

Ray,

I'll forward Jan's email address.

Just ran a new Wasp with one of his venturi/spray bar sets last week, and it ran great! Only two runs so far with Sig 10 percent nitro, 25 percent Castor oil, and it's turning an APC 5.7 X 3 at 19.3K RPM.

Don't know how he got the original Wasp needle to work so well, because it has none of the mechanical slop that it did on the Wasp carb.

Bill,

OK, will send it in a minute.

There are no instructions, but it's easy to put together. The parts you need off the original carb are the mounting screws, carb base o-ring, needle valve, needle detent spring, and the detent spring mounting nut.

I used a drop of blue Locktite on each mounting screw, and snugged them very carefully. The screws will shear off if you torque them as much as US made screws!

Another option is to run a 2 X 56 tap all the way through the venturi mounting holes, and use a 2 X 56 stainless screw from ACE Hardware, run all the way through the carb base. Did this on my first Wasp with the Cox venturi, and saw no change in performance.

As an entertaining aside, I set up an engine with a Jan venturi drilled to .125 and a Norvel Pressure Tap backplate.  It runs a storm.  We discovered that one of the mounting screws for the venturi was missing, so there was air entering below the spraybar, and it ran like always, never missing a beat!  Probably gained rpm!  Talk about a reliable system!!!  VD~

Another aside to Wasp newbies:  READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and follow the break-in proceedure specified.  It really matters!!!  It is not typical of ABC break-in you are used to, but it works.

Here is the Wasp with Jan's venturi and spraybar installed. The o-ring, spraybar nut, needle setting spring, and needle are the original parts. Note how the venturi and needle are rotated so that the fuel line clears the muffler and the needle is moved further away from the prop.

OK guys, sorry I duplicated the question in this thread with my post last night, I just posted my request before I looked to see if anyone had already been looking for AP .061 venturi's,  I've read this entire post now and seen many people request Jan's contact info to buy the venturi's, but I've still never received his contact info, would someone PLEASE post it in this thread or message it to me directly.  Thanks so much in advance.

Hi all,
I've E-mailed Jan about these venturi's, but I haven't seen anything back from him, likely because I don't know him and have never E-mailed him before, my e-mails are probably going to his "spam" folder & he's not seeing it.  Would someone on here that knows Jan Please e-mail him and ask him to e-mail me at kplaneman@aol.com with all the purchasing/ shipping info on these venturi's, it would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks----James

Well Jan finally was able to get back to me, He doesn't have any venturi's and is not planning on making any in the near future, anyone have any suggestions, or did I just end up with two engines that I won't be able to use?

Oh Dear,
I was planning on getting another couple from Jan. The ones I have are really excellent, looks as if I shall have to swop venturis between planes. I wonder if Jan has a minimum quantity to make it worthwhile running off another batch? Maybe we could start a wants list for the venturis to see how many we would buy collectively? I am in for 4 units, how about other people?

Regards,

Andrew.

Here is my setup I used. I was able to use Kirn Kraft needles for bladder on combat and a stock Cox spraybar and needles for running on draw. If you can find a local machinist or someone with access to a lathe this is an easy adapter to make. A Cox venturi is a 1/4"-32 just like glow plugs and that's the threads in the center. Dubro wheel collar set screws were used to retain the adapater. I just ran a tap through the case for the set screws.

i can make the inserts that you can screw the TD venture into  if made out of delron they can be made a tight fit so the allens dont do all the work

Although my aluminum adapter was a very snug fit, I'm puzzled as to why you think the allen screws are doing a lot of work. I'm using the stock o-ring under my adapter and I spotted 2 dimples in the adapter for the set screws to lock into. I spotted them slightly high so that under thumb pressure it compresses the o-ring slightly and I snugged in the allen screws with a bit of Loc-tite on them. It's not as if I'm stressing the case with pressure on it, it's just locking the adapter in place. Ken

it sounds like you are doing it right ,it is just a little easier to get a snug fit with the delron because it will give a bit when u push it in

Doug Galbreath graciously converted two of my AP Wasp 061's (yes, purchased through the hated auction site).  Doug does truly amazing work.  Doug has the added benefit of making and stocking 1/2A NVAs.  I cleaned and shipped the two motors stock, then Doug fabricated the venturis and installed them with two of his new NVAs.  The results are beautiful.

Attached (hopefully) is a picture of the two motors.

Hello Ken,
I like your Cox 0.49 venturi and spray bar conversion, it has all the right looking stuff. I would be tempted to use the TT assembly with the Kirncraft type spray bar as everything is easily available. Is there any problem that you can see with running such a set up with an ordinary stunt tank?

My original intent was to do just that. The engine however wore out before I was able to try it. The engine had no more than 50 flights on it. The play in the crank was present when new, but after a few runs it wiped out the bushing. This was the same experience that others had on some of the other forums.  At the time Global parts had the case but the website wasn't functioning.  I had a new bushing installed in the case, but the plug blowing problems were just overwhelming. So, the engine was placed on the backburner and it still resides there today. I surely would like to hear some positive results from those who decide to try my mod. Ken
