Aggravation Saver

Well, went by my folks house  today and my Pop had come across a Sullivan Hornet 1/2a starter.  I never thought bout getting one, but he picked it up.  This thing is the best thing since sliced bread.  Saves a ton of tenative aggravation and keeps my fingers from getting cut and numb from hitting the prop.  Wish I had one 20 yrs ago when I cut the top of my finger off on a cox that started up backwards.

John,

A power starter is a great help with 1/2A engines. The NorVels and BigMigs all - I think - have a steel washer to prevent the prop drive washer from galling on the case. Cox engines didn't. This is an important thing!

Still, it may be best to just 'bump' the prop with the starter cone, not try to drive it until it lights. The most important thing shoudl be getting enough RPM to light off.

Tee Dees, Killer Bees and Venoms all had washers to allow power starters.  The rationale being that power start is popular in Free-Flight and Speed.
