Does anyone know what mag. & which issue the Snapper was in? This is the same plane that Minnesota Mdlrs is offering. Also, Walt Mucshiano had a plane about the same time, called (I think) Little Joe, or something close to that. Ed

The magazine Snapper was a Red Reinhardt airplane with sheet wings. I built the other one, full fuselage, built up wings, from the kit in about 1954. I started another from plans, but have given the plans and built parts to someone who might finish it.

There are a couple sources for the plans for Red's Snapper, Flying Models published them along with another flat wing ship it may have been by Dick Sarpolus. The second source is the PAMPA OTS plan book (you might be able to get a download from PAMPA site if you are a member).

More recently, Flying Models 12/89. If planning a build be sure to use a stiff, but light, C-Grain balsa for the wing or you'll have a pretzel on your hands!

Hi Ed,

Ray offers the Southwestern Models version with the built up wing. Not sure if that one was ever published as a build.

I'm pretty sure that George Milliken's half-A Snapper was published, because I remember drooling over that article in my early teens. One Google hit indicates 1951 for the design date, and that would be about right.

i am not aware that the design was ever published. I have both an original kit and one of Ray's copies. All I need is to stop reading Honor Harrington space war books. Just finished re-reading the whole 20 volume main series. Still have the half dozen side story volumes. If you think having a LiPo go up is a big deal, try having your fusion reactor go out of control to ruin your day!

You may be right, as my memory is a bit unreliable! Could well have been a kit review I read.

Ray Stone's kit plans are reduced size and very difficult to read, but clearly indicate it was a kit plan. There was no reference to a publication date.

Does anyone have a copy of the plans from Bear?

Gotta watch that Sci-Fi reading habit. It's almost as addictive as model airplanes, and engines.

I found my Snapper plans in my shop. From Carstons. Had them for years and will have to build one someday. There is another plane on the plans to. From an old model magazine and article by Ward Van Duzer.
Gotta find some good wing stiff balsa. Oh....I have a Cox Medallion to strap on it.

The kit I have by Ray Stone, is a built up wing and fuselage, and looks nothing like the Outerzone plans. Same designer (George Millekin), but perhaps an early version?

I got my plans laid out....bought the balsa....Cox Medallion ready to go.
Gonna start cutting out parts today.
Wing balsa feels fairly stiff but I'd like it stiffer.
Would adding thinned epoxy resin to it help in stiffness?

I presume you are doing the sheetwing Snapper, not the built-up one. Try the carbon veil doped on both sides. On the other hand, that design was supposed to have flexible wings.

The website note about the sheet wing Snapper plan (Reinhardt) gives the span as 20 inches. My recollection is that it was either 28 or 30 inches in span. Can anybody with an original plan give the real span?

I just cut one out.....29.5 inches on my plans. Van Duzer and Reinhardt.

Got two Snappers underway. One will have the Cox Medallion and one the Black Widow. Hopefully some fun practice planes. Man....I do love flying a 1/2 A for fun.

How did I ever miss this one? It does look like a fun build and should fly great. I had the other 1/2A Snapper kit and literally wore it out. OK Cub for power of all engines.

Got the primer coat on one today! Just rattle can paint. Must....get....in....the ....air))))

Don't worry too much about the wing being stiff as a 2 X 4! Just a good piece of checkered "C" grain. As Red said to me once "This is my experiment in variable dihedral!". And mine is!
