1/2A line question...
« on: August 24, 2013, 07:02:11 PM »
In regards to glide ability. I guess lines are a factor not to overlook. So my question is ..
Are the metal cable lines lighter or are the spectre <braided ? fishing lines lighter.
And how do they compare drag wise.....
I won even ask about the old dacron lines I grew up flying 1/2A's on.

I think that size for size the fiber lines are draggier. Surface fuzz, I guess. They certainly are lighter.

I like the braided Spectra/Spiderwire/etc, mainly for the reason that it's quick and easy just to wrap the lines around the handle. It makes for simpler setting up to fly and packing up when you're finished. Just be sure to use the right knots because these lines can and will slip and come un-knotted if you don't. Many 1/2A sport fliers like light weight like 14# test, but my planes fly well with 30#, drag isn't a bad problem, and they are easier to use without tangling and kinking. Those are only my personal opinions gathered from many flights with no failures. Another thing I like is when I get wild doing lots of loops, and don't count wraps, they never bind no matter how much I twist them up.

I agree with Rusty, although I am one of those guys that uses the 8-10# stuff. I am currently using high visibility yellow Spectra so I can see it in the grass. Like Rusty mentioned use the Palomar knot. I didn't at first until I lost a line. There are good tutorials online that show you how to tie it.

I have never experienced fuzzing like Larry has. I suppose it could happen though. I have used the same set of lines for several months and they still look new.

I may not have been clear. The lines Don't "fuzz up" , they just don't have as slick a surface as steel. I have never had a problem with spectra lines degrading, but they do have more drag than the same size as steel. >:(

I had 10lb spider break the first time I used it but I am convinced it was the plane that was cursed. I have since changed to 30lb. I have experienced occasional line "flutter" flying the clown on 30lb. I don't know if the plane is flying at just the right speed for that to happen or if it has to do with the 45 foot length.

I get it now. To be brutally honest I have never used the .008 cables as I heard they are prone to kinking. I went from Dacron to Spectra and it was a world of difference. I have some 1/2A steel lines so maybe I will give them a shot and compare.
