Hunter Stunter wing into a Twister or Twisted wing
« on: February 20, 2015, 12:17:38 PM »
Any recommendations on how to UNTWIST this Hunter Stunter wing? ...

I know I can just contact Eric Rule and buy a complete wing kit and make it again. Or scratch build one but there must be a way to untwist or fix the warp.... FACTOR 9! Darn it is bad! Most of my wings end up either like this or not straight. I think you would call this a LEARNING CURVE.

How did you do that?  Put the sheeting on with the wing in the air or something?

You'd need to peel off the leading edge sheeting (top and bottom), and reattach it with the wing held straight.  Preferably you'd hold it straight in a jig, but pinning down the spar and TE to a board, with sufficient shims under the TE so that the ribs don't touch the board, should be enough.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Here in the LE.  But the TE looks like the warp is there? The RSM wings are extremely fragile. Taking off the LE sheeting or TE sheeting will be a pain but I can do it. Sounds like I may need to unsheet the TE sheeting as well?

As to how I did it. I did use a wing jig but it was a simple homemade one. But hey, I did get an A+ in the underwater basket weaving course.... lol

If you were much closer I'd tell you to put the wing in your car and get over here.  But 3 hours is a bit too much of a drive.

I would take the LE sheeting off, then see how floppy the wing is, and where it wants to sit.  Unless you have shear webs in back, the TE sheeting isn't going to add a whole bunch of torsional rigidity -- if it's willing to flop to "straight" (or if it's already there) then I think you can get by with leaving the TE sheeting in place.

It looks like, in addition to the warp, your spars are standing quite a bit proud of the wing ribs -- either you used the wrong size wood, or it's not fully seated in the notches.  I'd probably want to sand the spars down flat with the ribs (carefully -- it's really easy to sand huge flat spots in the ribs).

If it's held straight when you put the LE sheeting in, and if it has no stresses imposed on it, then it should be straight when the glue dries.

Thanks Tim, that is a perfectly understandable answer. I will get to work on removing the LE sheeting. not going to be fun but it is what needs to happen. Thank you and I appreciate the offer of one on one help. Means a lot way out here in Yelm. Lol

We are going to be at the flying field in Littlerock both Saturday and Sunday. If you bring it by, we can help.

Well it only took 10 min to remove the LE sheeting. Probably take 2-4 hours to get the wing cleaned up enough to apply the new LE sheeting. So much fun.

we should be at the Littlerock RC field tomorrow, flying after the field work party.  and our ALES glider contest is Sunday, 10am-3 pm-ish.

Bring some control line stuff up and we can fly.  we have enough room for 52' lines for sure and maybe 60'.  I'm going to bring something on 60' line to see if we can fly that long of line safely. We need to pull a little more brush to make more room.

I am home bound this week till Tuesday when my SSDI makes it in. That was my reason for being so let down last week and making it there with the gas I had. But due to my cognitive issues misunderstood the clean up date. If you see the Mike the Brit. He should remember me and my GF showing up with gloves and rakes in hand... Boy did I feel like a dumber assery... LOL. I can fly here in yelm if anyone likes. Just have to fly electric only here but have nicely mowed grass field that can handle 100 ft lines.... lol so lots of room when needed. Have fun out in the Mimas mounts.. darn golfer mounts. Pesky critters. Just ask Bill Murray from Caddy shack.
