Rigmaster Jr. power, O.K. Cub .14 or .19?

      Hi All:

      Which would be better to power a Ringmaster Jr? What size and length of lines should be used?

All of the Cub engines were on the anemic side of the power curve. Use the 19 with a 2 oz tank. it will provide decent sport flying performance. It has one advantage it is a light piece of metal.

I had a Cub .149 on a PDQ baby clown. It barely had enough power to power it and it liked to catch fire on starting. It was almost worn out.

I had one with the Cub 14, we used an 8x5 PowerProp about 2 oz uniflow, fly it on 0.012"cable ~ 52 -54'  C to C. If you run it in a rich 2 cycle it will due fine, also could use the Cub 19 (clip 9x5 down to 8.5" prop) on 58 - 60' same diameter lines. Only drawback is not having a muffler, if you are out were noise is not an issue no problem.

my  first big plane was a guillow's trainer #2 with a green head K&B 15 and would out run the two guys with Cub 19's .next plane was a R/M jr with the 15,on 60 ft lines i did my first loops with it ,i am sure it would have flown better on about 55 ft i would go with the 19.

Bob, If you mean trainer #3 then that was my first plane also, with a K&B Greenhead 15 ! Talk about a tough plane. On the day of my first successful flight, I stuck it straight in the ground 4 or 5 times overcontrolling it!

I would say the 19 also.
The 14 would be cool if you get a set of plans from Pat King for his RM junior plane and build it light. I got the plans from him and plan on using a Cox 09.

LOL.  First successful CL flight (c.1954) was on a Ringmaster Jr./OK Cub .14 on 35' lines.  Very docile, to be sure, but it did the job.  Second Ring' Jr., also Cub .14 powered, was much lighter, hand-launched (no landing gear), and would loop and do mild Figure Eights.  Prop was a Tornado Plastikote 7-6 on both.  Francisco Powermist fuel.

After beating hollow logs to death with an OK Cub .049, I built a Jr. Ring with a Fox .15x slant plug. I learned to fly inverted on it and also learned how to repair crash damage almost every time I flew it. Somewhere in there I had a trainer of some kind with an OK Cub .19 although I don't think I ever flew it. I still have OK .19. I gave away the Fox 15x last year.

In 1955 I learned to fly the AMA stunt pattern on a Ringmaster Jr, with Cub .14 for power.  On 52 ft lines it was actually a good combination.  It was a very light airplane and the Cub had plenty of power on .012 52 ft lines (center to center).  I was primarily a combat flier prior to that (and after for that matter), but had seen a couple of guys in our club fly stunt and it interested me.  The "Ring" Jr was a pretty good flying airplane with that light engine.  It was capable of the complete pattern and eventually I learned to fly a respectable (at least recognizable) pattern with it, then built my first Nobler when the "Green Box" kit first came out.
I do remember that the Cub was a little hard to start but ran very well in a wet two!  8-5 Top Flite prop (I think).

My first "gasoline model airplane motor" was an OK Cub 14. It "propelled"  my Guillow's Trixter Trainer, then a Jr. Ringmaster, and finally, a Sterling P-40. Always over-propped with a TopFlite 8x6 and under-nitroed with Testor's 39. Looks like I was in good company....

To get back to the question, the Cub 19 would be a better choice, in my opinion.

Frank, with all this input I'm looking forward to your flight reports. Oddly, I never flew a CL model with any Cub, I used them for FF. My FireBaby had Royal Spitfire and my brother's a Wasp. I did consider using an OK .35 at one point but after the bench run I decided NO ONE should be subjected to that noise!!!!
