Just showing off. My first pattern plane.
« on: August 09, 2014, 05:27:53 PM »
Don't let the looks mislead you, it's a Skyray.

Got my linkage done. Gravity pulls it full up and full down, free enough for an electric if I were of that persuasion.

Just fine tooth combing it.

There is the tip with the adjustable leadouts we discussed in my other thread. Still need a couple of gussets on the tips.

Ain't that a handsome bird!

The only painting to be done is one more coat of polyurethane on the rear fuse, color on the tail, Monokote and decals. The canopy will be black. Sky blue with silver feathers on the wings

Thanks. I have some aluminum Monokote, and I'd thought about calling it Silver Streak. But I'm a surf fisherman and love to watch ospreys hunt over the ocean. I think I'm going to call it an Osprey. I have a screaming osprey head to go on the silver cheek. Maybe something featherlike on the wings and tail. Hope I'm not biting off more than I can make look good.

My two baby Streaks are the best little flyers in my fleet. I did my first one in the traditional scheme

Oh me too Shug, I'm really looking forward to meeting you. And so is a small following amongst my Carolina Gang, I just mostly have to represent them on the forums.

As we speak I'm making decals for this plane. Even though it's just a basic trainer I like for it to look cool.
Monokote tomorrow and hopefully maiden this weekend. I'm such a painfully slow builder.
See you in the funny pages. Have fun!

G'day Rusty
Lovely job on the streak.

I hope I don't sound rude but is there any chance you could post or send me some pictures of the magnum in the background of the last pic please.

Regards
Damian.

Thanks Damian.
Sure thing, here you go. If you want some detail pics, let me know and I'll get them for you. I've torn off some nose covering to repair hangar rash and fix her up, so it's going through an ugly phase right now, she's an old one. Here's a pic and a link to the story behind her:

Awesome story Rusty. Was great reading.
Thanks very much for posting the pics.

I have to finish my nobler off. Then I've got an rc crop hopper to build for my daughter and after that I'm onto the magnum.
I've acquired the original plans too, thanks Noel. Can't wait.

Thanks again and apologies for the thread hijacking.

Damian.

You're welcome, Damian. Next up for me is an Oriental. I hope you'll do a build thread, because I'd love to see the innards of the Magnum. I've not considered it hijacking. After all, I think "showing off" is part of the title.

I am very excited to come down too and meet the Carolina gang. Eat some good BBQ and suck down a jar of Dukes Mayo! Have some livermush and overdose on sweet tea.
No flying for me this month as I am on the road with my show. I may get one day next week but it is doubtful. Hope to practice up a wee bit before October. I miss that handle in my hand))))
This will be my first contest(more or less) and I am entering Intermiediate at many folks suggestion. Scary!
20 years ago I entered a contest and placed third but it was sheer luck and force of will. I banged my Banshee up on the first flight and a father/son team there ran over and grabbed my plane and repaired it. I had never even done the whole pattern. The judges places me on sheer verve and nerves. There were only 4 in the running.
This time I feel OK with the pattern....at least getting through it. Never have flown off asphalt so that will be different. Just hoping to have a thrill and some fun and not be horrible.
See you there.

Good grief, a jar of mayo, livermush? aaarrgh... I think I'll have a handful of Tums for lunch after having read that.

It's very laid back in H'ville, no nerves, just fun. I flew beginner twice, Oct. and May, so I've gotten that behind me. This time I'm intermediate too, so maybe we can pit for each other. That sort of thing helps the butterflies a lot.
I can get the pattern points, but not very pretty right now. And we always have a bunch of spare ugly planes in case of a wreck.

Man I wanted some Monokote on it bad by tonight. I started putting gussets on the wingtips today, Went out to finish after supper, but it wasn't to be. Hot in the shop, 94% humility. I got 8 out of 12 cut and glued and just ran out of gas. Tomorrow it will be easy again. Here's what I was working on. The last piece of anything to be made and glued for this plane. I did make and install the tailwheel today. Well I didn't make the wheel, but, you know what I mean

Three on the top and three on the bottom of each wingtip.

EDIT: I just realized what Shug's reference to livermush is, and If people here called it that I would have never loved it. So for you who want to know, and for those of you who Really don't want to know... It's BBQ Hash! Eaten on rice with a splash of red pepper hot sauce shaken onto it. And it is good stuff. And I never ever want to hear it called Livermush again thankyou.

Cool, that's a neat idea for a Skyray bash, you could call it a "SkyStreak" ;D

Hey thanks Wayne, I'm pretty proud of the way she's turning out. It's straight and true, I'll find out if it's a good flyer soon. after those last gussets, nothing left but decoration. I have a list of names. I'll wait till I pick one for the unveiling.

SkyStreak and Silver Streak crossed my mind, but didn't get the call. It will have silver eagle feathers over the sky blue wing, and some appropriate continuation of that theme on the tail. A black silhouette screaming Osprey head(Sea Eagle) on the silver inboard cheek block. Silver, black and plain urethane on the fuse are the main color scheme.

Our club meeting next Saturday is at Triple Tree Aerodrome, the home of Joe Nall That may be the most likely place for my maiden. That's gotta be good luck!

Minus the Monokote, the whole thing with engine, muffler and tank installed is 29.9 ounces. I think I'm going to be right in the range for my OS 25fp.

Here she is with the base Sky Blue Monokote. Got some decals made, a screaming RW&B eagle for the silver nose cheek. I'll cut the silver feathers that span the wings tomorrow.

So far so good. Come hell or high water, she maidens Saturday.

Rusty,

Took a second look at your photos.

I noticed the size of the elevator. Did you make it larger, or is this OEM?

Hi Charles.
The stab/elevator combination is larger than a stock kit Skyray's, so the elevator is much larger than a Flite Streak's. I enlarged it following Brett Buck's recommendation for a Skyray practice clone, as well as adding the full ribs. But my Streakish shape changes as well as the addition of fixed flaps puts me in no-man's land, so I'm hoping it doesn't introduce any unwanted flyability problems. I had no Flite Streak plans to refer to, so the shapes of all of my tail-feathers, rudder, wingtips, canopy, etc are from me looking at a Baby Streak hanging from my ceiling and freehanding it on graph paper. All nose and tail moments are still Skyray though.

One of my flying buddies reminded me I haven't posted about this Skyray-Streak thing lately. It flew its maiden voyage last weekend at Triple Tree Aerodrome, the home of the Joe Nall fly-in. A beautiful site with three circles where the Carolina Gang had our monthly meeting. Unfortunately I blew an arm and couldn't fuel, crank or fly that day. So at my invitation, Wayne Robinson agreed to fly the maiden for me.

The old .25fp, new to me had never been cranked since I've had it, and no exaggeration, it lit off on the first flip. That's gotta be a good sign. Wayne flew one trim flight and it needed a trim tab. I'll have to investigate that, maybe I shrunk some Monokote too tight. On the next flight it leveled off in both directions, so at my signal, Wayne proceeded to wring it out. Really nice, he reported no bad habits and strong in the overheads.

With my disabled arm I couldn't finish the last decoration, so it hasn't got all its looks yet. It will have an aluminum Monokote swoosh on the wings, sort of like the Streak, only with an eagle feather look. I got two fuzzy pictures of it, so here it is. I used a sharpie and wrote, "Pretty decorations go here" on each wing.

Thanks Dane. I'll be glad when I can fly it myself. I hope to be back in flying condition this week, certainly no later than next weekend.

Oh, and I meant to mention, its final weight is 34.5 ounces. Not light but not fat considering all the changes I made. Well within the range of the .25FP. I'll get video when I get my wings back. Got some practicing to do, October in H'ville is coming up fast.

AW Shug I was so disappointed. After laying off flying for 3 weeks I was really jacked, I was going to fly my new plane at the most beautiful facility anywhere. Thursday before the meeting I went to a hospital for a free PSA blood test. All went well until she wrapped my arm waay too tight with sports tape. Long story short, a hematoma was growing. So at home I iced it, but later it swelled and swelled into a ridiculous rock hard blob from elbow to shoulder. When Saturday came it was pretty painful but I loaded up the planes and Holley and I hit the road. I couldn't hold my arm straight out so I figured I couldn't control a plane but I was going to try. At the field I rigged up and gave the prop a flip for a test run. Kapowkapow I saw stars. Something in there broke and what had been bad was now debilitating. 120 miles from home and 107*F and I'm miserable. Icing and sitting in the car.

I tried to be a good soldier and visit with my buddies, but I was a mess. I asked Wayne if he would fly my plane and he agreed, so I held it while he preflighted it, fueled and cranked it and flew it on its first flight, the maiden. The rest is history. Monday the Doc said I had ruptured my bicep tendon, a complete disconnection from the muscle to the bone.

Given my medical landscape(28 yrs of dialysis plus other things) no Doc would risk surgery, so it'll stay detached and I'm waiting for the swelling to go down. That's part of why I haven't posted all week, lots of medical tests and Doc visits and I just can't move it without really intense pain. It's gradually loosening up and I can move it some now. I even started piddling with my Oriental ARF and will start PT this week. I think I can probably fly soon, I can see and feel improvement every day now. Yech! What a cluster#)%*!

I successfully drove my wife's Passat Saturday, so I'm getting back in action. I hope to try some tentative flying late this week. I'm optimistic. And now you know........The rest of the story. Good Day.

I hope that wasn't too much info for a forum of fun.

Thanks Doc. Still can't hold it straight out but it gets better every day. The pain has eased up and  I'm planning to do some light flying this weekend. I'll let y'all know first hand how she flies.

I finally got started on the eagle wings I've been talking about forever. I got some clear fingernail polish under those wrinkles and pressed them out. Hopefully it'll stay. I had to close up shop as I couldn't keep my hands off of it while it's drying. The Monokote is stuck down with Glass Plus. I hope that works as well as Windex. It seems to have more detergent, which is probably a bad thing. In 24 hours I'll outline it with clear fingernail polish.

Tomorrow I will put its name,"Osprey" in cursive on the inboard wing, and my loooongass AMA number on the outboard wing

Looks like it blends with the eagle head on the nose.

Thanks for the compliment John.
Here's one last pic with the name and numbers. They're a 3 color gradient but the photo doesn't quite pick it up. I want to put some scary swooping silver talons on the underside so it's not invisible in the blue sky. And to keep baby bunnies and puppies off the field.
