Hi Johnson Stuka
« on: March 16, 2013, 05:40:09 PM »
For those that might have questions on Hi Johnson Stuka, I presently have one. The plane was built at the request of Hi Johnson by Henry (Hank) Spielman In 59 early 60 time frame. It is powered by regular Johnson 35. This plane was flown at the 61 nats with Hi Johnson watching. Hank had crashed his Hi Aspect plane, ran out of gas doing overhead eights. He pulled the Stuka out to fly. The wind was fierce and a lot of flyers decided not to fly. He had very few previous flites on the plane prior to this and failed to qualify. The plane flew thru the wind and would howl when it went by. I have acouple drawins and plans with separate plan for the stab that is bigger than the plans showed. I flew this plane at Brodaks in I believe 1999 and Windy did tape its flight. I thought about entering but do to the age & historic value, I didn't want to risk a pull test, so I flew a Hi Aspect built around 1955 or 56. I still fly it now and then but its best to fly off cement than grass which bothers me. If the engine quits upside down may not be able to get it upright . Hank got out of u control into RC and got rid of all but three planes that had centimental value which I now have. If anybody has any questions I will do my best to answer for you. Hi Steve. I saw one of the original Hi Johnson Stukas fly, in about 1959, that was built by a very good pilot by the name of Dennis Schauer. He was very proficient at not only stunt, but racing and combat as well.  He designed the Classic Gladiator models of which there are two sizes.
The stuka appeared to fly very well. I have a set of plans and would be very interested in obtaining an accurate drawing of the larger horizontal tail. If you would reply to this post I'll get in contact with you.

                             Thanks,
                                           Tempest

Maybe Mr. Ivy will respond here.  He knows a lot about Hi Johnson's Stuka.

Hi Steve,

I had one of Hank's planes back in about 1961. It was the blue and clear silked one. When I got it from a friend the fuselage landing gear was missing. My Johnson 32 engine fit in perfectly. The wing was 60" long and looked like it had nobler wing airfoil, but no flaps. The ribs were 2" apart. It flew fast some were around 65 mph. I have just one photo of it some where I will post when I fine it. I gave it to a friend just before going in the Air Force.

I would really like to see the picture if you can find it. I have the original drawings from 1953 along with the plane. The Hi Aspect changed some what over the years with the exception of the wing which stayed the same measurements. The wing on the black plane flown at 61 nats had more swept back, less wing tips, but maintained the 58"s. A red one I have has scalloped leading and trailing edges Hank said was the best flying of all. I drew up drawings of the late 50s and early 60s with the unusual designed fuselage. The bottom was a V shaped from about the back of the wing all the way to the tail. If anybody has one of these planes or pictures I would love to know. I don't know what happen to Pat Rogers who used to fly a copy after he moved to Florida.

Steve also sent me to post the previous designs of Hank's planes. This is the 3rd in the series of Hanks designs showing the bottom and construction of the fuselage.

Steve says that this is the best one built in in 61. And a real good flyer.
