OK here's a pretty good topic......
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:38:30 PM »
Which model design is prettiest of all time.....

Here are some suggestions but definitely not all that could qualify:  1. Minado, 2. Cobra, 3.  Avenger. 4.  Continental,
5.  Thunderbird, 6.  Venus, 7.  Argus, 8.  Impact, 9. Trivial Pursuit,  10.  Spectron Columbia.  11.  Vector - - well, you get the idea.

Jim Pollock,  my pick is of course #1!

Your examples are all Modern Stunt.  So, don't forget the modern full-body semi-scale stunters.  Like, Spitfire, Hellcat, Bearcat, or Ryan STA.

Floyd,

The simi scales are slated for a thread of their own, but I sure don't see anything better than AL's P51's or
the Sea Fury.

John,

Isn't that Gordon's Tony?  It's pretty nice too, but I still think Al's P-51's are prettier.

Well, You know, Paul's B-17 is in a class by itself.  It is practically exact scale except for the Stab/Elevator.

Yes Jim, That is Gordy's Tony. Like Al's designs it is pretty close to scale. The wing has it's AR reduced, and the stab-elevator was enlarged a little, but the fuselage is within 1.5% of scale.

Yes, the B-17 is in a class by itself. H^^

I think if you are talking about world class scale stunters you must include Ron Burn's models in the mix. His Wildcat, BT-13, and Zero (Oscar?) are incredible. They don't have the contest record of the other "famous" scale stunters but the details (full detailed cockpits, rivets, real panel markings, scale researched paint jobs) are only equaled by full-on expert scale models. I have only seen the Wildcat fly (at Golden State) but it will definitely do a decent pattern. As far as beauty, I'd have to include any of Steve Buso's designs in that catagory along with the others that have been mentioned.  8)

Does anyone know where to find information on obtaining and installing hinges like the ones Randy used on the stab/elevator in his fabulous plane that Howard posted?

(I haven't figured out how to go to earlier messages for the Insert Quote (Insert Picture in this case) feature once the thread gets long enough that the Topic Summary goes over one page.  It's probably totally obvious...won't be the first time!)   :##

In my opinion, the (1)"Tucker Special" is (easily) the prettiest Classic. I'm not so enthused about the O'Toole version or the Mk. 4 version. The design is so basically handsome that a complex paint scheme is detracting. (2) '59 Thunderbird. I tend to like a model plane that looks like a model plane. I think that's what Ty likes about the Barnstormer, tho the Internats Stunt Winner is "nicer" looking. (3) I'm a fan of "round engines". The Razorback
P-47 would be great, if anybody would build a good one. Bill W's wing was not close to the correct shape, fuselage too thin, etc. The later Thunderbird wings were perfect, so it can be done. But I digress. Roy Trantham's "Highjacker" is extremely good looking plane. (4) I like the "Ares" a lot, but like the "Cavalier" more.
I'm getting thirsty, so I'm gonna stop... HIHI%% Steve

The hinges are Robart Pin or Barrel hinges. Very easy to install using a guide and a drill.

There have been more designs since the Argus.  To me it was another Ares laid out differently.  If I had the room I would take one of each of all the stunters as they are all gorgeous.  To really judge them, need to paint them all solid black with no markings.  Then judge the outline.  Yes the "Nobler" would be at the bottem of the list even tho I have had several of them.  Elliptical wings/tail surfaces are the prettiest of all.   D>K H^^

My vote would be for the Minado. I don't know how well it flies, but the example I saw at VSC many years ago was absolutely gorgeous, and dripped with Zen.
