Title: i build my first biplane
Post by: Michael Novobrantsev on February 05, 2020, 08:51:37 AM
Hello !
Now i  build my first biplane like biceps   wingspan 47"
  Chord   without flaps    is 8"
 Engine in side position.
Now i am in  choice betwenn engines :
MERCO 49  or  ~>  FOX 60 EAGLE I ?
weight  of   both engines  is 350 -370 gramm
I know  Merco is  is good stunt engine  , but  his weight  like Fox 60
I don t know about  stunt experience of  Fox Eagle I  60 .
 Anybody have ideas ?
 Thanks

looks nice .

No experiance with the Fox Eagle , but a Merco 49 . With This intake . the Trumpet ish one . But the long lug case , single plug , & a 49 not a 61 . Tho Ive two 61s now , & no 49s .  :-\ :-X :P
Incidently , theres two C'Case Intake bore diameters . Bored one of the 61s to the 1/2 bore Of the Trumpet intake .

The 49 was initially a bit tight , but loosened of & on the Fox Fuel , 27 % oil , 15 & 20 % Nitro , with stock head clearance , ran superbly . Even when you put a muffler on it .  :-X o.k. I was out in the sticks .
The big heavy ugly Super Tigre Quite Muffler, it ran well . No power loss . tho snapped the puny 6 B.A. bolt aft , doing squares .  :P Stock Head Clearance . Australia . Might be ' Nitro ' Comp Ratio for Here ? .

Windsor Wood 12 x 6 , thinned . on the 72 Oz 72 Span Mew Gull . tho'd be more with 4 Oz. muffler !

SO , think a GOOD Merco ( This was as new ) would be dependable & trouble free .

Had the tourque to hold a steady speed , even when it was blowing . Something Id think youd need . As theres a bit of frontal area having several wings & suchlike .

NEEDS GOOD COOLING FLOW , a decent intake area and free flowing cowl discharge . Mine was 7.5 mm intake bore. Will dig out the timing figures . they Vary .
Was a round hole to passage in crank , whereas the 61s I have are rectulinear . One 61 has a 1/4 prop thread/ shaft . & its shorter nosed than the usual 5/16 thread shaft .

I suppose a Merco Muffler would even fit .  S?P Was much gruntier & steadier , rich , with the Nitro . So 10% might be the idea . Ran a steady ' top of ' the four stroke , puled uphill well .with the weight .
Good in the Squares , would stay ' fueled ' . Probly a 6 Oz / 150 c.c. fuel tank .

p.s. Hope youve got a good strong ' no slop ' control system . 1/8 wire ( 3.2 m.m. dia. )  horn wire etc . Plus the 4 inch bellcrank . for leverage . Even a 4 1/2 " bellcrank ! .

I know  Merco is  is good stunt engine  , but  his weight  like Fox 60

Saves Noseweight, so the planes lighter .  :-X

Think mines 130 Ex 110 Trans . Superb run. Will check ' the book ' ( when I find it  :-[)

Keep the pictures flowing .  H^^

this  is  about timing of engine . LL~
I measured compression ratio on merco 49 III dual plug  , it  sign compression ratio is 8 !!?
I think it is so few ? But engine run so good 13/6 prop

Sorry,
one of our silly English Jokes ! .

Heavy Engine = needs no nose weight = lighter aeroplane ! . ( obviously 1 + 1 = 11 theory )

The 130 - 110 is the timing -> piston opens closes exhaust & transfer ports .

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/zN-r9ubQXFfv7nuHLppb7L-yV6Z1TW5IytR7AOdoVjczloWnJ3gpSU6dvcQqa3zlDXJ8dBNzn7n5hzpRJkZd45gsQusEklhsSEsYcJ4kbaP0dX2cMGp4I_eTJBqHOFh12zz-QxbtZZPw_dQPpA)

Differant gasket under sleeve . the thickness . Varies Timing .

A pointer from lug , find top & bottom of stroke . Measure across from piston right down , ea side of b.d.c. , say 65 + 65 = 130 .
the MERCO cylinder is OFFSET ( Desaxe ) to crankshaft , so figue each side not identical .

Very Easy to ' drop ' the timing on a Merco . Lower Sleeve = thinner gasket .
BUT IF ITS GOOD , DONT STUFF WITH IT . Just keep it oiled .

 :P

Yes. Very intresting aeroplane . Nice look .

To see drawings would be good .

I keep making my Bipe .
Now it weight 950 gr 33.5 oz  ( summary wing area 810 sq.in)
 weight will be more  from:
-engine+prop+spinner+tank
-wheels axle=wheels
- farbe +cording film
- upper flaps
- lateral struts between wings

wings sceletons are still not grinding ,

Leftovers of foam glue not yet cleaned .
I use PU foam glue because  i work and obtain balsa and foam parts not very accurate yet :-(
and foam glue fills the gaps.
This connection obtained strong and elastic.

Michael,

Looks like you are making good progress! Thank you for sharing your project with us.

You might find it fun to compare your biplane design to one from the 1955 Flying Models magazine. This design was named after the hunting dog, because it was supposed to "be a mean one," and keep the pilot "on his toes."

     https://aerofred.com/details.php?image_id=80412#plan

Maybe it being so short coupled had something to do with that.

I recently finished a plans-built BiSlob, and find it to be twitchy, which is probably not really what I enjoy flying.

Dave

Dont know if thats a NYLON elevator horn ! ?

You have to be very carefull with controls .  Bullet Proof .

Steel 1 inch arm ( 25 to 28 m.m. ) and 1/8 in wire ( 3.2 m.m ) so no twisting or                slack  .

Most people use 4 inch ( 100 m.m. ) bellcranks with maybe 22  arm . Carbon Fibre ( Arrow Shaft ) pushrod .

Controls are one of the most important parts of the aeroplane .

that Asside , its looking good . What are the cabane struts made from .Not Steel wire ? .

Horn made from Ф3.2 mm strong durAl  bar , it bar use to Argon welding for ALMg  alloy
Nylon  part is connecting  horn arm  with carbon pushrod .
Horn arm  have thread and nylon connector too ,  i can turn connector to high or low for change to ratio .

Has anyone else noticed?  The wire to the elevator pushrod seems very small.  Is the pushrod straight?  Any bends in it?  Be careful there is no flexing in the pushrod.
Title: Re: i build my first biplane
Post by: Michael Novobrantsev on March 01, 2020, 12:26:24 PM
Now pushrod  is stright  , diameter  2mm Bicycle spoke
( it may be  3.2mm Al)
that do you think ?
Title: Re: i build my first biplane
Post by: Air Ministry . on March 01, 2020, 08:31:03 PM
3/32 inch , is 2.4 mm .

In Kiwiland in 76 , the wire was ' S .W.G. ' which is English Sizes . 10 G = 1/8 In ; 8 G. = 1/10 in .

2.7 mm was a good size , more ' bearing area ' than 2.4 , and for other things . But .35 models & .15 Combat wings at the ton . 160 + kph .

PUSHROD ends at 3 mm diameter will save some weight over 3.2 mm ( 1/8 ) Wire . But either is o.k. ,

Best to have the ' L ' bend at the end say 25 mm to pushrod . say 38 mm ' binding ' to rod . So Wire 2 1/2 inch say 65 mm overall .

i whack the pushrod end over , then cut the bent end tto 3 mm high , to stick in hole , or slot for fine setting , then epoxy & bind
with strong thread . Pushrod on the OUTSIDE of the tube .

Couple a pictures , out of a Staler 76 in a 9 now 0 80 ounce 800 sq in plane .  1/8 inch - 3.2 m m Wire .

Often the pushrod at the bellcrank , the C.F. rod needs to start ' past the arm ' , mainly to clear the leadout wire .
Therefore the wire at that end, may be way longer . like 4 inch , plus . Over 100 m.m. , to get good adhearance on / to pushrod .

If you build em tough .

Personally, I'd go with the Fox on a 12 X 6 at 10 K. I ran one that way and it flew beautifully. It was a mono plane......can't think of the Bleeping name. Darn old timers!

Good luck, Jerry

Hello!
made  5 flying on this week ,
engine FOX 60 Eagle  (abc p/l)
Bipe  very sharp - maneuvr .
speed is good-comfortable
prop 13.5/6or7
I  tried  to fly with different  position of cable on inner wing end  and  made choice of comfortable position .

I made   wooden ventury several times on different engines .
It s simple.
Easy to  grind  by conventional drill or screwdriver , no need  lathe.
just  soak this part in  fluid epoxy ( before installing)  S?P .
It may been resistant  to methanol and nitro.

we are the people also  not iron and no eternal H^^

Yesterday i was reduced rudder and flap costs , distance between cords too,
the iron cone and  muffler is heavy , but still very sharp - I will lengthen the nose S?P

Nose  was made longer 60 millemeters  .
 Result  - more stability.

Your biplane has nice proportions, and looks good in the air.  With your large engine, you should do better with longer lines.  53 feet lines would be normal for a .35-size plane..

I will happy flying on more long lines , but nearest site  for everyday training  so small. On beginning build bipe  i was wanted  more  powerfull and heavy plane for this  small circle , because  i made bipe  thinking that  just bipe compact size and  powerfull engine  for sharp maneuvers on 53ft lines . every sunday i going to big area and fly on 63 ft  lines .
 I like it !
Time and space added in sphere. I dream on small circle training learn me flying more sharp and clear.
Today i try to used 12.5x6 prop - 4-2-4 transitions occur more easy, traction almost did not decrease .
I think 13.5 slightly heavy to my engine,
 Tomorrow i  try  13x6 prop.
