Though my aero gear for the coming season is well along ( 2 new Desperados and a classic Skylark) I'm thinking about what will follow. I recently acquired a Discovery Retro .76 and am considering a semi scale project. The engine will be setup a sidewinder like the Yatsenko Sharks. I think I have it narrowed to two. So tell me which you'd choose:

I think that the first plane will fly better with the mid wing and the wheel pants are cool, but it looks like the stab is super small....

I like them both, so not much help.
I'd probably go with the top one though, very striking looking profile view.

They both look very cool. The MiG would make a good electric stunter.

Don't say MIG around here, it tends to draw unwanted attention...

I like this one, but try sketching the fin large enough to positive yaw stability, and see if it still looks good.

Tim the first one is the Brazilian Anequim sport plane brought to my attention by Elwyn Aud in a post here.

Most semi scales pose some challenges. Brett mentioned upping the rudder area and what it will look like. That stab is really small so getting that up to my 'numbers'- around 24 %- will look quite different. Yes that wing is in a good spot. I mold my own canopies but this one is a handful and my little oven is too small for it. The kitchen oven might work but I'll likely make many goofs before I get a good one. I might try open air molding with a heat gun. Lots of carbon to keep the fuselage stiff.

The Mig would need the wing moved up a little. That's pretty normal. The big radial nose has proven to me to be a little challenging in the wind on a Zero and a Japanese Jill torpedo bomber I did some years ago. Maybe that Avenger too if I'd have flown it in much wind. The cowling scoops up a bunch of air and force the nose in any random direction it wanted. The large spinner and a closed down opening might overcome this. Also that big DR .76 swinging big lumber might help. Otherwise this one would be a little easier to build.

Howard I'll forward plans to you when I do them. Maybe you'll electrify one. I have to change a garbage disposal out. That's about all the voltage I can deal with. I suppose there is an electric set up with enough power for a 700 sq. Mig.

There have been electric motors in my LHS that are as big as my fist, and will fly 1/4-scale warbirds. So yes, there's something for a 700 square inch MiG.

There is another I found interesting. It would be nearly scale. It just isn't quite what I like in terms of forward side area. It's cool though:

Dave, I would go with the MIG!! I like the spinner with the radial engine front! I have an idea it may not present the problems you had with the complete open radial front. Maybe you will want to do one of the paint schemes with a patriotic slogan!

The vertical fin is also pretty large at scale and could be nudged up just a bit without distorting the appearance to overcome any concern over yaw stability. It's a good looking airplane and I agree about the radial mit spinner look. Dihedral per Sir Rabe would be a must I would think.

Probably not going to happen, Tom. I once had the scale drawings of the Hughes Racer I was going to base a stunter on but the same year Steve Moon showed up with his version at the Nats and sort of took the wind out of the Racer's sails. Too old and too far out of things to get started on something that demanding. I just hope I can finish painting my four or five years in progress new Chizler before VSC!

I thought I had that market cornered. I'm still painting after a month on this years-in-the-making rebuild,...profile model! Dave will have his MIG designed built and flying by the time I finally get the last dope on this thing.

Hi Ted. Sometimes the truth is a painful thing. Written as I sit waiting while the lady shops.....yes I think this project will require some Mr. Al's holy water on it. A little dihedral and not sure about the rudder.... The steep taper in the wing planform will need to be moderated to something less lest I have to buy a new vehicle to haul the wingspan.
