ARGO II, 007 Casino Royale!
« on: February 05, 2016, 07:02:41 PM »

Yes, I hate building wings, so I put a T-Bird wing to good use that I acquired. Yes, the wing was a mess, I should have tossed it, but a bit of work, a bunch of work actually, and now it's useable.

My second generation ARGO II, 007 Casino Royale, won't be prestine, and neither is the wing.

Sure beats building one.

The ARGO II's fuselage, not much of it actually is some of the T-Bird fuselage.  LL~ LL~ LL~

Without those T-Bird kit parts I probably wouldn't have had this new ARGO II framed this soon.

I'll have photos as soon as my camera battery is charged. Tomorrow.

I hope the ARGO II, Casino Royal, is well received.

Thanks Rusty.

Charles

Edited: Spelled Royale incorrectly. Did that once with Spectre.

New Edited. Decided to described the wing accurately.

I built my Thunderbird as a teen, probably in 1962 or 1963 would be a good guess. 53 years ago!

I don't remember if the kit had parts for an inverted engine back then or not, but I built mine with an inverted engine.

Funny when you get old, some things you remember well and other things are no place to be found.

Like I can't remember anything about the engine hatch or how it was held in place? And that inverted engine, I'm thinking the kit may have came that way?

I do know the T-Bird is an great design. I always did love that wing. Be interesting to know how Bob Palmer came about that design?

Stab, elevator and rudder works well with the overall shape of the wing, but hardly designed to match the shape of the wing, especially the rudder.

With the ARGO II, I wanted my tail area to match the wing a bit and I used the outline of the first ARGO's rudder.

The fuselage, although salvaged from a T-Bird kit, is hardly T-Bird at all, The fuselage resembles the original ARGO, thinner and longer, and one would be hard pressed to see any T-Bird in the design at all.

The wing is obviously Thunderbird and I'm happy about that.

Glenn,

Yes, I just walked BOTH dogs. Well one dog and one puppy, now 12 weeks old. Indiana and Redington.

Indy and Red.

Thought I'd sneak in a few photos of the ARGO II, second generation. Casino Royale 007.

Longer fuselage than the ARGO, longer moments, wider control surfaces and much lighter.

I hope the ARGO II, Casino Royale 007, is well received.

Thanks for the reply Glenn.

Spent a half hour on the second generation ARGO II, Casino Royale 007, this morning.

Did the wing, stab and rudder fillets using micro-balloons. I call micro balloons "Dr. Good." You can use micro-balloons for many ailments on a model.

I use the finger method to apply this stuff without using tape.

Just enough to get a small clean fill. I have a paper towel wet with alcohol ready for a quick wipe.

Just a minute or so with rolled sandpaper and I'm done.

Hard to believe, but I've covered six models in a short period of time and I'm really at a loss as to which covering material I'll use on the ARGO II.

Is this a kit? I like the looks of that airplane.

Liner,

Yes, it's a kit, but a special kit. One of those no longer produced things, a Taiwanese blue "blueprint" plan jobs.

Comes with the tank, wheels and yellowed canopy.

You know, nothing measures correctly and nothing fits. You could use the wood for chair legs.

Guess you didn't read the very first Post?  LL~

Update on the ARGO II.

Decided not to use silk because I had just enough old stock silkspan to cover the four wing sides.

I will have to use silk on the stab and elevator.

I did one wing bottom today.

One down and three to go.

That Enya sitting there is just that, sitting there. The model is fitted for an OS LA 46, has a different footprint. Just wanted to see.

However?

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I know of other sources/brands of dope and have experienced them. I consider Sig the one I personally, IMHO, find the most user friendly. At least for uses anyway.

That's why I use Sig and will continue to use Sig until something comes along that isn't dope. Which was my reference actually, to get away from not having to use dope at all.

I read someplace, I believe, that Minwax Polycrylic was used to fill weave? I've used it on solids only with good results but never to fill weave. The ARGO fuselage, for an example has, Minwax Polycrylic on it.

I said I was going to use silk on the tail and I did.

In all honesty, I'm glad I used just about the last of this old silkspan stash I had. I don't think I'll be using silkspan in the future. First coat of dope and it went sag a bit, not much, but enough to get me concerned.

I hit it with my heat gun and it came back tight. I hope I don't have to do this after each coat of dope?

Silk is all I'll be using from this point forward. I don't care if it weighs twice as much as silkspan.

I have the application of silk nailed and am confident with it and applying it.

Todays efforts.

Charles, when you say "silk," are you referring to the same stuff my wife's scarves are made of, or is this something thinner and lighter?
I have one of my buddy's very old planes he gave me to fix and refinish, and its wing was originally covered with silk, but it's now rotted and breaks when you touch it.

Rusty,

I'm not the "silk" expert, there must be one of them someplace, so I hope someone can give you a better answer than I can.

I know modelers by silk scarves, yes, similar to the "French" ones my wife looks for at flee markets and antique shows. Some scarves have great patterns on them and look good on models. I've seen photos of done up models but cannot remember where? I even considered this.

I have used "Aero" brand silk from packages sold to modelers for using on their models. My package says Heavy Duty, so my guess is to stay away from a silk that has the word "Heavy" in the description. Possibly?

"Or maybe not." A line from the movie Transporter.

Sig silk, of which I recently purchased also says "#4 Heavy Weight." This ESKI silk product is similar to the AERO and feels a bit stiff. Starch?

Some guys say silk should be washed or rinsed?

So, I went back to the silk that was recommended to me in this Forum a few years ago when I was silking the Flite Streak. This would be, Dharma Trading Co. They have a website.

Their silk is soft, light and thin. I like it and it's easy to work with. Well, my guess is we all work a bit differently applying silk. I use pins and a small brush to keep the dope off open bays.

So, others have used this silk well before I have, and now I'm sold on it.

BTW. Wanna buy some Silk, I have a couple of Sig packages, the color is dark blue?  LL~

Thanks for the reply. It's needed.  ;D

I managed to get a bit more clear on the covering.

Weight. I'm concerned but really not a great deal, but I am trying to build lighter. Trying

I hope this scale is incorrect, but it looks like it isn't because I placed the model on it twice.

As you see the model in the above photos except without both flaps.

666g, I know, interesting.

1lb. 7.6oz.

I will weigh the model again after the next coat of dope.

BTW. I have not silked the fuselage yet.

Glenn,

Hey! Hey! You're the only one.  LL~ LL~ LL~ ~> ~>

Glenn, guys are looking but don't Post. Hit numbers show that. Gotta remember, this build isn't anything new. Not in the least actually.

It's all old hat, just a different design.

Now the Stuka Tank Buster or the Gee Bee Z, that could be interesting to a few. Possibly?

Now my upcoming TEXACO 13 could be interesting also. Again possibly? But will there be replies?

Who knows? I do know "The secret is out there." X-Files!

What a great show and I have all the dvd's. ;D

We'll have to see. I'm OK without kudos. Kinda.  LL~ LL~ LL~

Thanks for the reply.

I applied a coat of thinned dope today to all the "open bays" only. Wing and tail feathers.

The before weight was:

675g or 1lb. 7.8oz.

The after weight is:

686g or 1lb. 8.2oz.

Weight Watchers scale.

No flaps on the model for this weight.

For anyone else that keeps track of weight, this is what I have to offer.

I hope this ARGO II is light and continues to stay light.

Primed the ARGO's elevator about 15 minutes ago. 41g as the crow flies on a Weight Watcher's scale.

I'll remove a good part of the primer. See also how much weight gets removed with it?

I don't know Mark.

Realisitically there's a lot more to a model than just the elevator.  LL~

"I'll say." A line from the movie Seabiscuit. One of my favorite.

There's the rest of the model that has to be taken into consideration, can't forget that?

The model, heavy evevator or not, weighs in at 671g right now. I'll need that weight back there anyway.

But there's been no comments on elevator weight to make a comparison to. Just one?

The elevator measures 3/8" thick x 3" wide X 24".

I'm confident this model will do the pattern. Heavier models do it all the time.

Quick note. With the fuselage design, short the way it is, I'll bet I'm saving an ounce or two back there?

Got an early start with the Nikon this morning.

A bit of filler, micro-balloons, to reduce the hatch gap on just one side. Left over waxed vinyl backing paper works well for this.

I just want to get the ARGO II in primer so I can get back on the Stuka. I still have to silk the fuselage, hatch and rudder. I might just use Minwax water base Polycrylic there. I had great success with it on the ARGO.

Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Also.

This Thread should not be here in "Stunt Design."

It seems "Building techniques," is where the build Threads take place.

Can this Thread be moved?

The fuselage, rudder and engine hatch are now covered with silk and two coats of Minwax water based Polycrylic has been applied.

I covered one side of the flaps this morning I'll do the other side in a few hours. I have had good results with the Minwax water based Polycrylic so I purchased a Qt. this time. 17.00.

I dressed up the wing tip slot where the opening was wider in the center. An easy fix. Also gave me the opportunity to correct the shape of the wing tip to match the other one. Was close, but I could notice the difference, the slot side was a tad flat and not curved. Small improvement but looks much better.

Finished the remaining coats of Minwax clear and sanded the entire model with 320. Should have primer on the model any day now.

Brick by brick.

Fred,

You haven't updated your Builds, what's goin!

I'm going to try to get primer on the Argo II Tuesday. Might be a dry enough day for applying a quick dry primer outdoors.

Thanks for the reply Fred.

I've been neglecting the Thread but I haven't neglected the model.

The ARGO 2 is ready for paint. Still some imperfections in a few areas, but I'm done. I'm moving on to paint.

Here's some updated photos and the color palette.

206,346 hits plus on my Mig-3 build over at CFC Graphics vendor's corner.

It does, I discovered the same. So I cut the backing from the vinyl you sent me into epoxy mixing squares.

Rusty,

You can glue pieces together with CA and they won't stick to this waxed material. I always save some of it just for CA gluing.

AND, unlike wax paper, this vinyl backing paper has some body to it, almost like photo paper but a bit thinner.

I've used the white side many times to print plans and for templates.

Thanks for the reply.

I wonder if it could be used for makeshift photo paper in an inkjet printer. I'll let you know, now I've got to try it.

Why is it so bothersome, that an artistic guy loves airplanes and uses them as his preferred palate? A lot of people here on Stunthangar type way more than they fly. Painting and finishing is a whole 'nother aspect of the hobby, just like engine lovers, who get their rocks off doing machine work and bench running. Some guys collect engines only to look at them. It baffles me as to why, but they do it without any ire from us frequent flyers. But then I don't have a mean bone in my body. It wastes too much energy and time I can't afford to waste.

I like to stop in and look at Charles' work because it's interesting and pretty damn high quality. The Skyfall is an example I'd love to have in my own fleet. Maybe I'll try to copy it some time. And his graphics look great on my latest plane. I drew a picture and he tuned it up and turned it into vinyl. Saved me a bunch of time from hunching over the table doing it myself.

They stop in to look for the same reason people always slow down to look at a car accident. And everybody loves a good train wreck! Everyone has their voyeuristic side. And most of them are wondering, when is he going to fly at least ONE of these models?
   Type at you later.

Dan,

I decided to clean my first reply up. Shame on me.

You just need a bit more love.

Thanks for the reply.

Hey! that other Thread worked out really well. Great information that would never been had with a simple search, really good vendor sources AND more importantly, "participation."

I learned something from that Thread and looks like you did also.

A good thing.

Now imagine if I never started that Thread.

Well, in all honesty, I did put it up for a purpose, I was hoping someone would respond to my having to build a custom tank. Which I have never done before.

Oh well.

I have to admit I am fascinated with the guy. He's such a perfect example of his 'type" of internet trolls I just wonder what makes him tick. He's not stupid, that's for sure.

You run into people like him a lot on USENET, or at least you did when USENET was a serious pursuit. The closest equivalent that I can think of was a guy in SCI.SPACE named Brad Guth who believes, or at least claims to believe, that there is sentient life on Venus and that NASA has a massive conspiracy to cover it up. Never mind that the surface of Venus has a pressure of 90 atmospheres, is just shy of 1000 degrees, or has sulfuric acid clouds, nor that if there WAS life on Venus, NASA's budget would be infinite in perpetuity. He can make rational and complex arguments that hold together on some level, and can go on forever with boundless energy. He makes the same sort of basic errors of fact and is stunningly ignorant on his topics, but then constructs elaborate and reasonably coherent defenses trying to cover that fact. Of course he assumes people are coordinating their efforts to gang up on him.

    Brett

Brett,

You’re so kind and thank you for the reply.

Yes, I try to promote the hobby as often as possible and I try to stay as pro-active as I can.

SH is a great Forum and anyone can Post, reply or start their own Thread. In fact, there should be more Threads. The more there is, the more interesting the Forum becomes. The more interesting the more viewers, the more viewers and the hobby grows. A really good thing.

I always wonder why there isn’t more Threads?  There’s always building taking place, not to mention interesting things going on in the work areas of modelers that could be shared.

Robert, BTW. You did a great job redoing your work area, looks really good in your videos. The floor makes the space look larger, so good choice there.

Sure Brett, I could just Post replies with text as most do, but how many people read books without photos?

Soooooooooo, I Post photos as much as possible to make my threads and replies more interesting. I cannot imagine anyone finding fault with that?

Man, that would be a terrible thing, attempting to marginalize another modeler because of jealously, or other self centered reasons.

"Who would be “anti-hobby?”

Good news though. Eventually I hope to mirror Sparky, and eventually upload videos.

I’m kidding. But I gotcha! Really, just kidding.  I’ll stay with photos.

Interesting thing about using a photo/picture in a build is, “Use a picture, it’s worth a thousand words.” 1911, said by Tess Flanders referring to journalism and publicity. I think?

I do wish more modelers would share their interest and work as I’m sure you do also.

So, let's all work together to make Robert's Forum a place where sharing and the growth of the hobby can take place. Nothing hard about that.

Thanks again for the reply.
