Title: Vintage C/L Picture - Please help identify
Post by: David Redden on September 05, 2006, 02:55:17 PM
Hi,

My name is David Redden and I work at Sig. Even though I'm an R/C guy, I know that you control line guys are pretty hard core. Many of the flyers who come to our annual Fly-In have been coming for decades. I thought I would let you guys take a crack at a family mystery.

This picture sits on my son-in-law's bedroom dresser. It shows his grandfather John Stokes and he believes it was taken in Superior, Wisconsin around the year 1949. (There are cars in the background of the picture that may help date the picture).

Please help with any information you can about the plane, person or if you can date when this picture was taken.

Thanks,  ???

It would be a Class "D", with a .61, judging by the size. With the Dooling decal on the side, it's Dooling .61 powered. Franny might know, if anybody knows how to contact him.

Nice design, excellent workmanship, with neat details, like the removable fairing over the glowplug or sparkplug. Wish I could help more.  :) Steve

That picture is from my Dads era. He lived in Rienlander WI at that time and flew D speed. I will see if I can get this picture to him. He flew A BALL #13  engine and won the Candian Nats (with a whopping 102 MPH) around that year. His name is Richard (Dick) Storick. See if any one you know of knows his name. It may help

Note that is a clockwise ship. That might help someone recall.

That model is from my era or at least when I was flying speed back then. I definately is not a "Hell Razor"  I feel confident it is an original design but I don't recognize the man.

Darn good guess Steve. Very well could be a "Golden Rod" and if I had to guess the flyer I would guess Clifton Fitzgerald long since passed.

Dave,

The ship appears to be a "Snowflake", designed by Bill Viets, which briefly held the Class VI record (1947 AMA equivalent of today's D).  A construction article appeared in April 1948 "Air Trails".  I believe that the record was around 142 MPH.

not sure if this will help but,
the car nearest in the background looks to be a 41 or 46 chevy or pontiac.
not enough view to see much more than that
