Tried messaging a couple guys with no responce.

I've been trying to obtain a new D unit for a couple of years now so I could finish a Rossi .60 Kansas Twister with no luck. If you have better luck than I please send me the contact. I do have two original H&R units but I'm hesitant to use them due to age and Zoots bad experience with one.

I have a hand drawn plan for making one. If interested let me know.

Dennis

I just emailed Marty Higgs to see if he still makes torque units as well as bellcranks and buttons.
Hope I hear back from him very soon.

I tried contacting Marty a couple of times but had no reply.
I have one of his 2 button bell cranks, which I got from another forumite.  It's beautifully made but the bell crank doesn't turn on the bushing, which I'm told is normal. However, I don't know of a way to mount it securely in a 1/4" thick wing without leaving enough slop so it can turn. So, I pretty much have given up finishing my model.

Dennis;

I am not sure as to how thick the center bushing is on that bell crank, but all you would need to have it move easy is .010" to .015" clearance from the stud washer/bolt to the actual center bushing of that bell crank.

Wish I could see your model so that I could see exactly the area and space you talking about for mounting that unit.

Carl, here's my original post: https://stunthanger.com/smf/speed-talk/kansas-twister-build/
Adding a washer between the crank and the bell crank mount would just add more thickness to deal with. The Twister wing is 1/4" basswood so there's not much room to play with using a button crank. The wing is more suited to having a monoline torque unit down the center.

The bushing thickness is .156" including a thin extra washer. Here's a couple pictures showing two options I have. A new torque unit would definitely solve my problem.

Dennis;
I see your big problem.
I have 1 new torque unit I got from Fast Hippy a couple years ago, but I think it is a C size unit.
The wires are aprox. .020 or .022" by the looks of them.
I can not get a mic. in to measure the wires at the button end.

Carl

I did email Mike Hazel and he is going to check with folks to see who is making them and to see if anyone has a couple extra B,C,D units they are
willing to part with.

Don't worry about getting the entire bellcrank inside the wing. Install the bellcrank beneath the wing with the buttons and lines recessed into the wing. An appropriately sized steel cap screw with an unthreaded grip portion can secure the bellcrank and also be the pivot.

Bill, I've already done a couple of mock-ups along what you suggest. There still needs to be a hardwood bell crank mount, which would have to be glued on top or bottom of the wing causing an unsightly / unusual bump. I suppose I could fair the mount in, which would hide the hump somewhat. So far I've avoided doing that because a new torque unit would easily solve the problem.

Have you considered making one? Everything could be done with simple tools except for the button. I think the hard part would be drilling the cross hole in the anchor.

Yes, I have considered it previously. Since I'm not much of a fan for metal work I've avoided it so far. One of the speed guys from Fargo (M.O.) used to make his own units with great success but he has passed on.

I could use the button from my H&R unit but if I was not successful making a new one I would be left with damaged goods.
PS; this diagram was drawn for me a few years ago by one of the guys here.

Check in the racing section as Bill B. shows how to make a button and how to attach to bell crank.  I have done several so far with no failures.  Get screws/bolts from RTL Fasteners.  He also has the blind nuts. D>K

Carl

The man you need to talk to is Dick Hart, he make units fairly regularly and sells them to support the sales of monoline speed models.

The sketch shown in the message thread is done by Dick Hart. I can tell the style with only seeing the thumb nail.

Dicks email is as follows britintexas66@gmail.com

Get back to me if you have any problems.
