The Brodak is back on with business as usual
« on: October 03, 2021, 11:50:40 AM »
I talked to Will Davis yesterday and confirmed that the 2022 Brodak Fly In is back on the schedule with the same format and event directors as before.

I will be running Perky and Two-Way Speed as before.

Fox 35 Speed will be replaced with a new exhibition event "Old Time Speed & Racing". The idea is to bring out your old stuff that has fallen victim to rules changes and show the people what it will do.  Any event is OK.  Use the lines, pull test, and fuel as in the past.
All events will be a timed for a half mile from a flying start.
Obviously, it will be a bit unequal to say the least, but it's show and there will still be the usual three awards.

It's an exhibition event.
All planes are timed for a 1/2 mile from a flying start.
Anything you've got that complies with any AMA Rules (past or present) is OK.
Just use the lines and fuel of the original event.
It's mostly a chance to show off your old stuff, but there will be the usual three prizes.

Will the Flying Clown Racing event also be held at 2022 Brodak Fly in?
If so, where can I find the rules?

Little unclear does this mean one could use high nitro fuels and pressure feed fuel systems? What length lines do you propose?

I there a calendar of events day by day for this event in 2022?

scale typically started on Thursday and rolled over to Saturday, but I would hate to guess on the dates for my Feb 2022 CL scale column

The Brodak Fly In is not the AMA Rule Book.  This is a special event, not a Rule Book event.

Yes, your can use pressure and high nitro fuels if the old rules allowed them.
Use the line length, diameter, material and pull test of the old event that you declare.
Line lengths were typically 35', 42', 52.5', 60' and 70'.  So a half mile is 12, 10, 8, 7 or 6 laps.

Paul,
Not to beat this horse to much, but I would suggest that you check with AMA on the pull test and line diameter size requirements to make sure the event (and Brodak) would be covered under our insurance if you are not in compliance with the current rules for the declared event. I don't think that using other items like fuel, line length, engine type etc. would be a problem, just check the line diameters and pull test requirements.

Paul,

Bring back the 1400 lap race!

They ran the 100 mile LA 25 Race in Toronto from 2008 to 2016.  At Brad LaPointe's request I got it added to The Brodak in 2016 and 2017.  The Toronto Balas Beavers dropped the race in favor of a 500 lap Sig Buster race with LA 15's.

The two times we ran it at The Brodak we had fun but only got three teams per year.

I guess if we had some interest we could run some form of marathon race.  Maybe with Brodak Foxberg planes if the interest is there.

Just read this and i can actually clean up my old 1/2A Pink Lady
and get it ready for Brodaks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

need to build a monoline trainer now to get back in monoline practice once more.

Lets see, got plenty of plugs, need NEW control lines (to the current standards) , both monoline handles are good to go,
got 2 gallons of nice and fresh (unopened) 60% fuel, NEED to clean up and make sure the dolly
is in good working order, check the engines over very carefully and make sure they fire up and run
with out any problems, props are good to go. Yeah, that seems about right.

A HALF mile, 7 laps on 60' lines.

Take note of the condition of the circle if you fly with pan & dolly.

Thank you.  We need all the help we can get.  It's an all hands on deck operation.  Timing, starting engines, and maybe even flying.

We will have official flying on Wednesday and Thursday.  We also allow early flying on Tuesday.  Friday & Saturday the circle is used by Scale.

There is chance that, if approved, the circle will be used by B Team Race on Wednesday morning.

There will be three Speed events this year.  Perky will be the same as usual, according to the published rules.

Several years ago I was asked to add Fox 35 Stunt Speed.  The event immediately split into two groups.  Some entries arrived with sport models with near-stock engines and went in the 60-80 MPH range.  Others made pan speed planes with engines that barely resembled Fox 35 Stunts and went 105-115 MPH.

Some of the sport entries requested a true sport speed event, so I creates Two Way Speed.  That event allows only plain bearing sport/stunt engines and requires that 7 laps be flown both upside down and upside right and that the model be landed on its wheels.  While their is no size requirement, the model need to be aerobatic enough to flip over and flip back.  In 2019 the top three entries were all in the 81-82 MPH range.

In lieu of Fox 35 Speed I have pioneered a new "Old time speed and racing" event which is an "run what you brung" exhibition event (with the usual three awards". While the competition format may not of all that valid, it gives you a stage upon which to exhibit your old stuff.   This is like the drag racing that used to go on on Woodward Avenue.  You can use whatever you want including fast combat planes, which can be flown over grass.  All models will be subject to the safety rules of their own event.

There will be NO attempts and NO practice or test flying.  But rather, every flight will be timed and scored.  That way, if your test flight is your best flight it will count.  The only limitation is giving every entrant a fair share of the time available.

We will be happy to have you.
Please note: there is a GREAT free dinner Friday evening, along with some fun entertainment.  The prize-giving is Saturday a bit after noon.
There are several reasonable golf courses in the area if you don't plan to fly all day every day.

I received a question about the 2022 Brodak Fly In flyers.

They were mailed a couple weeks ago to past contestants.

If you are interested I suggest that you telephone or E Mail Brodak to get onto the list.

Just got back and I am not aware of  any particular pictures of speed ships. Some might pop up  and I posted a pic of me with my vintage F-40 plane on facebook.
Brief rundown.  No entries in two way. Three old time speed and seven Perky's. The NJ guys had four inverted ships, Ken Towers flew a Cox powered upright and Whitney/Hallas had one of each .  The upright won.   In old time Ken Towers flew a Qwicky Rat with .35x on suction. He struggled a bit to get a time but with a good fuel system this combo would be pretty quick.. Since I had the lines on one of my Vintage B-Team racers I put it up for a couple of clockings on Wed.  Thursday afternoon I was at the circle recoeding times and generally overseeing and fugured I had enough energy to try my  .40 ship.  With Bob's help we got it running and I was able to hold on to it for 20 laps or so but one flight was more than enough to satisfy my 'what if' thoughts! The score board is posted on the controline FB group.
Worth mentioning was the weather. Wed. was 95 and Thurs very close to that so it was difficult for the planes and the Geezers flying them. Relative air density 89%.  Hope this answers questions.  TS

Where were you Paul?   I didn't make it out Wednesday or Thursday,  lack of wheels as family was going sight seing and Hersheys PA and didn't know when they would make it back to the field.   Was there Friday and seen most of what scale flying was done.   Guess gas prices kept most at home.   D>K

Oh, lt was great seeing people and faces I hadn't seen for a while plus some new ones.   Sam L is one tall slim kid/lad. H^^

My wife broke her ankle & knee a week before The Brodak.  I had to fly out to Colorado to rescue her.  I can't get away for more than an hour or two.
I was working around the clock to prepare for The Brodak.  I hope my absence won't hinder the future of the event.  They got my entry fees so I didn't hurt the bottom line (as in reduce the loss).

I'm hoping that she recovers enough to let me get out to Muncie,  but that's becoming more of  a dream every day, too.

From what I heard, Brodak's inability to rent golf carts was  a deal-breaker for some.  I think that when John was alive he could order up carts and get them.  His successors don't have all his powers.
