Speed for the dumbass

Is there a write-up on "junior's first speed plane" or something like that which shows the details of how to put a speed plane together?

Flying Lines has a couple of nice build articles, but they're both for monoline planes; I don't want to go there yet, so I'd like to see a series of pictures that show bellcrank mounting, how those mysterious buttons hook onto the lines, how you get the lines through the leadout guides, etc.

My favorite so far is Dale Kirn's torky article. If you order the plans from AMA plan service, the article comes with it. Or, on Monday I can email you a scan.

Hi Tim.
There is a very basic speed event you can enter, B Proto. The engine is well written up so if you want to go fast, you can. Stock will yield around 90+ from a standing start. I am putting together an article aimed right at your concern.
I think you have my email so send me a note and I'll hook you up with more information. The NW B proto event has some interesting aspects and can either be flown single line or two line.

That's exactly what I'm contemplating.  Russell Shaffer sent me plans, I have a 25LA so I should be all set.

I was planning, basically, on doing whatever I could that wouldn't involve cutting into or gluing onto the motor -- so I'll either just run a spraybar across the open intake port, or I'll make a bolt-on stub, I'll leave off the muffler, and if I get energetic I'll make a minipipe.

Two lines because I know how to fly two lines, and generally keep it simple because I'm not gonna win anyway!

And, if your into kits like I am, Pat King has a NW B model in his kit offerings in the vendor section. Or he sells plans for cheap. Looks really cool

Sounds good Tim.
Remove the muffler, remove the venturi, buy an extra head from Tower Hobbies (cheap) and have it set .010 from the piston at tdc. If you can't do that, then remove the gasket and lap the head to the liner and run without the gasket. This will get you around 95-98 mph with the 2 line, less without a good head. Get APC 7x7 for a prop and you're right in there.  Run pressure, either a bag or tin tank.
The new kit offered by Pat King is a good starting place for an airplane. Upright engine, lots of space and simple so that a cowling could be added if desired. We can help you learn to fly around that pesky pylon.

Check this excellent article on building a goodyear. It has the bellcrank info and line terminations you were asking about. Lots of other good information in there as well. At the end of the article there are several good sources for various items.

Hmmmmmm

I got a new ST X-29 B motor I could use in it.
Also have both Mono line and 2 line speed handles as well.

Might have to get one to build for fun during the winter.

Hey Carl.
The event is a proto event that uses the LA.25 only. But...you could fly it with your st in B speed. The LA is a hoot to try and get speed out of....a real challenge.
