For the past several years I have been the volunteer score keeper of Perky Speed. I stepped into a previous volunteer position that seemed have been abandoned. I also donated the plaques for Highest Speed and Average Speed.
This year Bob Whitney really broke the bank with a top speed over 120 MPH.
Raul Diaz was closest to average with 101 MPH which was a top speed goal not long ago.
I think the bank has been broken and, like other speed and racing events, Perky Speed has reached it's ultimate peak.
So, I will not be donating any more awards unless the records of 120 and 101 are broken. I will continue to accept scores for 2023 until the usual cutoff date of November 15, 2023.
If either of the awards are unclaimed in 2023, I will continue to keep scores until November 15, 2024.

Thanks for doing this Paul.

:D Well, what can I say :o? I s'pose you're right ... with the stuff I got I'll be lucky to break out of the 90 mph bracket HB~>. It's so frustrating but it's fun nevertheless. My congrats to Bob and Raul and a special thanks to you for your steadfastness :)!

OK so Bob Whitney will hold the record for Perky under the old rules. Since the 2023 rules change will there be new records?

OK so Bob Whitney will hold the record for Perky under the old rules that allowed whipping. Since the 2023 rules don't allow whipping will there be a new non-whipping record?
Best, DennisT
I would never accuse somebody of whipping or another foul unless I witnessed it myself. Whitney's Perky was flown by an honest man would be be offended by such a charge.

Paul,
Sorry I didn't mean to imply any foul. Bob is a stand up by the rules guy. I was my understanding there is a rule change this year that would reset the records for the new rules. Have I got that wrong?

I don't know anything about a rules change. I just record scores that people submit. In any postal event we have to accept people's word.
If I were in the business of rules changes, I would get back to the vertical engine as shown on the original planes.

Attached are Perky results from Ice-O-Lated contest this past February 2023.
-
OK, I have logged-in your scores.
The 2022 plaques are in hand. I plan give the awards at the 2023 Brodak Fly In.

Who said "inverted" engines were OK in the first place????

I don't know. It wasn't me.

When Peter Lott brought his inverted Perky to The Brodak it really stimulated our thinking. No reason someone could not have done it in 1946? No matter how you build them it is still quite challenging to get the best out of them on suction. TS

Are you saying you OK'd inverted engine?

I don't currently fly the event but as a long time C/L CD I would say an inverted engine doesn't really comply with rule #1 of the Perky rules: 1. The Model must be built to the out line of the original 1946 Megow Perky design. Construction modifications allowed.

We did not 'ok' that idea but thought it was a good variation. Then there is Henry's sidewinder........

The above link to NASS is the only OFFICIAL Perky rules that I am aware of.
They have let inverted and sidewinder engines get by at The Brodak so long it can't be stopped now.
Muncie is another venue. The AMA Nats tends to go by the letter of the law. If somebody entered a vertical engine in the AMA Nats and sought to disallow other designs, he would have a strong case.

Paul is right. That ship sailed a long time ago. The accepted interpretation of the rule is that the AIRFRAME must be true the original Perky design. Everyone who actually participates has no issue with the engine orientation.

Paul,
Please add Crist Rigotti to 2023 list. 93.42MPH at Dallas on Sunday 4/30/2023.
Thank you
-
OK, four scores thus far.
Crist is closest to average.

I logged in a new high for the year.
Peter Lott of South Africa with 111.7 MPH using his original Nova plane as flown at The Brodak ten years ago.
Five scores are in and (obviously) the average is up quite a bit.

That Perky probably went out in it's final blaze of glory... We flew the 2023 Nationals at Cape Winelands Airport, a field elevation of 400ft, with pretty much ideal, windless, cool (70 F) conditions on the 28th April. The needle setting was about as perfect as it's ever been and the Novarossi seems to have come into its prime. The engine cut out momentarily at lap 13 (fuel starvation I guess) then just after completion of the mile, I touched the ground and the Perky shed the propeller (APC 6.3 x 4), the tailplane and part of the cowling as it came to a rapid stop. Time to retire it and build another one...

Report from Middlesex, N.J. We had four entry's today. Nice day. We all had a few gremlins but got some flights in
PERKY Al Ferraro 112.5
Jim Vigani 109.1
Ernie Evon 91.2
Schaefer NT Back to the laboratory.
Fox Speed Schaefer 108.4
The highlight of the day was a visitor named Ron Howe who travelled over 100 miles to see about Perky and Racing stuff. He asked a bunch of questions, took pictures and wrote stuff down. Hope to see him out on the circle in the future.
-
OK, your scores are noted, eight flyers thus far.
