Greetings y'all!! Gott'a couple of questions about Perkys and I need some advice. I'm in the process of building a new one so I can claim the world speed record

1. I know tuned pipes are not allowed so how should the exhaust of a rear exhaust motor be ducted to avoid having the exhaust dumped inside the cowl?
2. Is it required to use the upper cowl for a flight?

I'd appreciate any suggestions/recommendations.

You can use a straight pipe to get the exhaust out.

I think you could use a tuned pipe, too, but it probably won't help considering the standing start.

This was the reason I asked: based on the "November 6, 2007 NASS Perky OTS Speed Rules Reviewed and approved by NASS Technical Director to ensure compliance with AMA Safety rules. 7. No Tuned Pipes or Megaphone exhaust extensions allowed. Mini Pipes and Mufflers are ok.

Lastly, does one have to use the upper cowl?

Well, as a profile model, I can see what the objection was but given the fact that the rule #1 states: "The Model must be built to the out line of the original 1946 Megow Perky design. Construction modifications allowed." However couldn't one be built using say a Dave Brown motor mount in the sidewinder configuration? I believe that would be allowable since that's exactly how my next one will be built

Two average speed trophys, now retired.
Formed aluminum roofing flashing to direct
exhaust and hold down rear of cowl.

Where are the rules or are there any apart from .15 no pipe?

Yes there is a "postal" event again this year. But there's no need to use US Mail. Just "post" your scores here.

Man, that's nice! Wish I could make mine look as good! I have a Conquest 15 r/c but it's a side exhaust and the muffler is pretty good sized so I decided not to build one for it although I believe it should be a pretty good performer .... just heavy with that muffler $:-\$ !

Where do I find the rules ...line length I assume standing start by thge numbers wheel diameter, nitro? pressure?

I have a couple of .15s some will run on pressure only

the conquest can be made rear ex by turning the sleeve and housing 90 deg to the rear, no need for a muff

two .014 solid lines 52.6 long two 1 1/2 in wheels ,no pressure .1 3/8 to 1 1/2 spinner .outline needs to match the perky plans

I'll let you know soon. Lol. Still haven't flown it. But I need to get an official this year

Looks good Mr. Jim. Tip. Get the wheels farther forward so she doesn't flip on landing. Also set the tailskid so the wing has only a couple degrees of incidence. This is from experience. TS

! Around here, we fly off grass (about 1-1/2 to 2" generally) so with the "legal" size wheels, flipping on landing is almost a natural, expected result for a Perky flight cause mine glide about like a brick

!

Greetings! Would you believe, I got lucky and bought it from a fellow from the Ukraine on Ebay.? Think I paid $35 or so. It looks pretty good but I have to admit, I haven't run it yet. Don't know about it being ABC but it does look very close to the Rossi 15 that I bought off EBay a couple of years ago and mounted on my scratch built version of Da' Blob, an F2C trainer. Man, that thing is a screamer!!
