The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Given the harsh limitations on 2.5 cc piston engines and the complete lack of limits on electric motors it is not surprising that the unlimited motors beat the limited engines.

Thanks Peter!

Do you know what folks are using in the power train?  Timers, ESCs, motors, batteries?

Thank you Peter.  The RPM is interesting -- I'm reminded of talking with a coworker at a previous job, who worked for a firm that made super-high-performance (for the day) brushless motors.  It turns out that -- in 1985, at least -- the limit to how fast you could spin a brushless motor was the strength of the rotating assembly.  At some point, the motor would throw magnets and seize up (these were inrunners) or otherwise suffer from mechanical failure due to centrifugal effects.

Makes you wonder how dangerous it would be if the outer casing exploded.
(snip)

I always try to stand away from the plane of the propeller, even with boring old stunt planes.  Because something flying off is vanishingly unlikely, but getting your face speared by a prop blade would really, really hurt.

Makes you wonder how dangerous it would be if the outer casing exploded. How fast is tip speed at 48K on a 5" prop?  714 mph, just below mach 1 for standard day conditions. I think that might exceed APC guide lines lol.

Motorman 8)

As powerplant engineer involved in turbine engine development I am always cautious about being in the plane of rotation of anything that has any kind of rotational speed. It doesn't take but once being around one that lets go. The amount of energy contained in a rotating body can be tremendous.

But ya gotta admit the intrigue of running that motor at 48k is big....

Forget your face - that would be the least of your worries. A prop blade, of any material, hitting anything human between knee & the top of the head would likely drop you stone dead - in one side and out the other! Wire cages around speed circles may stop a whole plane but I think i'd like to be behind 1/4" polycarbonate at least when shrapnel is coming my way!
