Title: OT Speed Fuels
Post by: Andrew Tinsley on July 27, 2015, 01:46:57 PM
Hello,
I am going to run some old time speed engines in competition. What is the minimum oil content for engines such as McCoy 60, Dooling 61,Hassad Bluestreak etc. I have always thought this should be castor, does anyone have experience with synthetic? What are the problems in getting high nitromethane contents for fuel. Are there solubility problems?

Thanks, any information most welcome!

Andrew.

Castor oil and high nitro don't mix.   That's never been a problem for me because I don't go that high on the nitro.  But the story is, use synthetic oil or enough methanol to dissolve the castor.

I was never convinced that 70% nitro and a 9x13 prop was necessary.

Made up some 50N/20C/30M fuel, wouldn't mix. Tipped in just enough stunt brew, 10N/10C/10S/70M until it mixed. Took very little, but I now don't know the precise mix I have! But it's good, - got the old Speed King up to 109.9mph, its best yet!
I believe another chap is using 70N/20S/10M.

I never flew the stuff, but I remember the old days at Rouge Park.  It seemed like fuel mixing was the key element in the days of McCoy 60's and Dooling 61's.  The speed guys would have crates and coolers full of bottles and they'd mix up brew for every attempt.
