Title: OS Pulse jets
Post by: Lyle Spiegel on October 24, 2022, 06:42:22 AM
I have heard of OS Mark II jet, OS Pulse Jet Type 1, and Type 2.
Would like to locate the instruction sheet, any photos, any magazine ewviews.
I believe Dan Banjock has one flying in his MIG.
Thx,
Lyle

Lyle,
OS made two pulse jet sizes, one is the same size as a Dynajet and the second was roughly 1/3 to 1/2 that size. I had one on a bid demo ship, it was the most reliable starting jet going. I ran straight white gasoline, ford vibrating coil and use a bicycle pump to start.

The trick with the bicycle pump is to drill out the end to remove the stem depressor and get full air flow or just cut it off and use the hose over the air blaster connector.  If you do a post on the pulse jet group on facebook you might get the instruction manual or one from a Dynajet.

Best,    DennisT

The OS Jet performs on par with a Dyna Jet Red Head. They are made a bit differently than the Dyna Jet. The head is an aluminum pressure die cast part and has the cowl. The Type II was set-up with a glow plug instead of a spark plug. Everyone I know who ran one went with the spark plug anyway.

What about eliminating both the spark & glow plugs using the spark rod inserted into the tail pipe?  I've seen that done and it seems like the best bet.

The probe works well and is used for the AMA Jet Speed class planes. They are a little tricky to make right and can be burned up if things don't go as planned. The spark plug is pretty much bullet proof.

Did you ever get an answer about this jet?

Yep,  I second that..... Tiger Jet.  I have a couple of these, still waiting to get around to running ne.   By the way, this is sometimes mistaken as an O.S., it is not.  Made by a different company.

Thanks for comments, I have figured out it is a Tiger Jet. It is 18 1/2" length so I think it is the lower thrust version, intended to run straight white gasoline (do they still sell that stuff?)

I checked Hobbyking web site, they show inventory of the reeds that fit their red head jet. If these can work in Tiger Jet I'll get some as spares. Does
Anyone know of an airplane designed for this engine?  A sport/ trainer would me fine.  I believe Danny Banjock in Philly Flyers club has a scale MIG with the same engine, as well as a Dyna Jet powered stunt that he has flown at Brodaks.

The Tiger Jet reeds are much smaller than the Dyna (& clone) reeds and so will not work.  I do have a small stash of spare reeds if you cannot get any.  Regarding fuel, gasoline will work but the methanol/nitro blend we use in competition jet flying is probably better.  You will need a larger metering jet for it to work, and you will burn more fuel.

"Clockwise forever." To do that means flying inverted!  ; )
