Title: New Perky
Post by: C.T. Schaefer on January 19, 2017, 03:58:57 PM
This topic has been a bit quiet for a while so I figured I would post something. After The Brodak last year I knew I would have to step up my game a bit if I wanted to at least be on the podium. Not that it's important. Not at all. I mean it's just a hobby with toys right! That being said, I finished a new plane and had no excuse to not fly it. So I did. Upper 40's with a light breeze. My regular weekday crew helped out starting and launching while I prepared myself at the center. I was relieved when it took off straight and true and grooved better than my first Perky. The NovaRossi was blowing plenty of smoke but ran smooth. The tank ran even and when the fuel was gone the plane settled nicely for a landing. When it touched down, both of the 'tires' actually shattered off of the hubs!! The gear is forward so the plane made do with just the hubs. Whew! With some scrounging I found a set of Lee wheels on an unused plane and harvested them for Perky. Now ready for another test. Maybe, with some luck, I can get close to that rascal in Florida not to mention my own team mate!   TS

Well, you had the fastest perky Perky, as opposed to an F2C Perky.
Is your new one perky or a millennial?

Hi Tom,

Do you have any pictures?

You might call it a 'millenial' but there is nothing on it that could not be done 60 years ago. No pics. Sorry I don't have a smartypants phone.

A perky Perky is a model that looks like it might have been built in 1948.
An F2C Perky is a carbon fibre/fibreglass millenial masterpiece that goes fast and looks like what it is.  A modern high tech marvel.  Not to say these are illegal.
It's just nice to see a perky Perky do well.

Gee, I never had one of my planes called a Master piece before

Thanks Paul for the pictures.  They really are worth a thousand words.  Great looking planes too!

Can you use any of the old racers from 1940s or are some better than others?

Here's a plan.  I had to shrink it down to fit the site.  You need to enlarge it back to an 18" wingspan.

7. No Tuned Pipes or Megaphone exhaust extensions allowed. Mini Pipes and Mufflers are ok.

Just so!

Perky Speed is the assisted living center for old F2D equipment.

Not all are in Perky, Jerry Rocha has turned over 110 (proto time) using an F2D in our F2D Proto event.

Wouldn't a Perky with a Fora qualify for that event?

i have ST RR/RE .15  originally setup for A speed with full pipe. Would it be suitable for a Perky?

Hey Lyle, The X-15 could be used. You would have to do some 'engineering' to package the rear intake and exhaust. Mainly fuel tank placement. Also the ST is designed for pipe operation so might not work well running open face. Back in the day the Rossi front intake was a much better and easier choice. Nowadays there are lots of choices. Older Rossis, Cox, Nova Rossi and many F2D,motors not to mention The Nelson!  Have Fun!  TS

my X15 was from 1980's before rules limited nitro to 10%. Not sure who built it, possibly Nick Shur or Brownie / Garzon .  i bought it from someone in Riverdale / Bronx. planned to build A  speed with Santo Rizzoto but never happened.  i still have my monoline rig, the Rossi A pipe and DARP A pan, and proper tank.   i need modern torque unit from Marty
Would this run on 10% using   a  mini pipe? is mini pipe legal for Perky?
Too bad no one in my area playing with speed.

I got a hold of a pipe-timed G15 back when we were trying to use them for F2D.  It didn't run well at all without the pipe.

I don't care it you try to run a pipe in Perky, but remember, it's a proto speed event. So if it takes a while come onto the pipe you won't have much of a score.

I'll just add to this thread since it's about new perky's.....
I've been a little preoccupied with things and unable to build for a while. Which sucks, because that's my favorite part of this hobby. Any way, I contracted my friend to help with this Cyclon in a perky idea I've been kicking around.
My question would be, is this set up deemed acceptable for the rules? We had to mount the engine this way to keep the original body lines and shape the same as the plans.
Everything else is definitely within the event rules. I'm very excited to fly this beauty

yup, looking good. Ok for a side mounted engine.

Dane, Clockwise?
Title: Re: New Perky

Yeah, I believe the remainder of this year and 2018 I'm gonna fly proto events clockwise. I'm really honing in on that take off lap.

Very interesting, Dane...'clockwise'. Back in the '40s, there may have been more guys flying CW than had caught onto CCW.

Anyone recall why the 'switch'?

When I started flying 'sport', I'd get inverted...chickening out halfway thru an outside loop...A voice inside my head repeated, "Down is up, down is up..." Very unnatural.

BTW, are these Perkys built with the .15 size limit? Looks like some larger engines here...

Yes sir, that is an old F2D combat engine. High revving little sucker, maybe just a big heat sink head, makes it look big?

To make things strange, I have been flying clockwise left handed. It seemed to work naturally. I've been flying my combat planes left handed just to practice also, but I had to stop that. Don't want to mix up and down. Lol

keep us informed on how it goes Dane. I've thought about it but was too lazy to put in the work. The Pink Lady F-40 is really going to like that. I've built some that liked to turn left. If you decide to abandon that idea, a sub rudder will correct most of the problems with a ccw take off.

Here's some updates to my little perky. A good friend is building it for me, as I have no real building abilities or room. Lol.

Mine works OK clockwise.  I fly like it's inverted.  Mine was tail heavy unflyable with the FORA.  With an ounce of lead & epoxy up front it flys well enough.
