Modifying RC car engines
« on: July 13, 2020, 10:20:12 PM »
I know that the racing guys running the OS 18 TZs dont have this issue but for other engines how do you modify the crank so you can mount a prop.

Hi David

Well, you are half correct. There were two different models of .18tz engines. One had the pull start and normal front end that would accept props. You had to grind off the pull start nub on the end of the crank pin, then order a regular backplate from your favorite O.S. Dealer (or make one).

The second variant, looked similar to the engine in your post. They are the version that came with what's referred to as the "Serpent" crank. The front bearing portion of the shaft was 7mm if memory serves. So, you have to find a collet and drive plate from an engine that used the same crank dia., or have a set made. I found one that came off an Irvine .15 car engine. The next item, is making a sleeve nut for the crank, as the threads are much shorter on the Serpent crank engines. You also cut off the solid part of the crank, just ahead of the threads. If you have access to a metal lathe, and the skill, you could make these parts yourself. Or, perhaps someone listed in the business section of this forum would take on the project.

Good Luck

Les

Hi David

If your crankshaft is 7mm dia you can find collet and propdrive from "FORCE" Engines.

Thanks for the replies.  I have no doubt that I could do it but the price difference in the airplane version of one engine vs the car engine is 50 bucks and the car engine is one i know nothing about so I think I will just spend the extra on the airplane version. Maybe down the road I can play with modifying a car engine.

I believe market for Nitro RC-Car engines in our Country is down,
reason why so many NIBīs on Discount, "SPECIAL OFFER".
New RC Car Racers trust on clean , not oily and quiet Lipo Power.

Discounts from -8% , to -26%.

https://www.conrad.de/de/search.html?search=Force%20Nitro%20motor&category=%1Ft16%1Fc37367

BTW, just for example ,
-26% Discount "Force CNC .15" , sells for 68USD + ship.
Sell the Pull Start unit + RC Carburetor (30USD) to someone which is looking for New parts.
38 bucks for a well made engine is quite a cheap project to start with in my eyes and wallet.
I guess other brands canīt beat that.
