First time watching a Perky
« on: March 20, 2022, 03:27:28 PM »
A fellow club member, Ronnie Thompson, flew his Perky today. 2.1 per lap or quicker. I didn't use a timer, but did the old military 1, one thousand, etc. Close enough for me. I think his heart beat was at 120 or so.  LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

I have seen regular speed ships do their thing over the years.  Not my bag other than Good Year back in the 70's, but it was impressive.  Looking at it one can see how speed ships evolved from it over many years. Lose the tail, one stab/elevator, enclose the engine, use a dolly, but it still looks like it came from the Perky.

If it really did 2.1 per lap you have a very competitive Perky.  If it does 2.0 you have the fastest perky ever.

One lap times are very inaccurate due to the start/stop error.  But it averages out well enough over a mile (16 laps on 52'-6' lines).

Next time bring a watch and get it for 16 laps from a standing start.  I Pad telephones have a  good stopwatch function.

We'll put you on the scoreboard.

1 one thousand, 2 one thousand counts are usually done too fast.

You keep changing props until it goes real fast. After that, you keep changing shorts....

On 52.5' lines 16 laps is a mile.  Don't make the mistake of saying "one" when it's launched. One is when it come around the first time.

60 seconds times 60 minutes = 3600.

The one mile time in seconds divided into 3600 = MPH.

36 seconds = 100 MPH.  32 seconds = 120 MPH.  About ten guys have broken 100.  Thus far there are no reports of anybody doing better than 117 MPH.

On your cell phone, go to CLOCK.  It should give you the options of "alarm clock" and "stop watch".

This is an award from 2017.  They're only about 2 MPH better now.

Hand held stopwatches are perfectly legal and adequate.

But at The Nats and some other big contests the owners bring out this rather rare and expensive equipment.  It times every lap to microscopic accuracy.

Note the rocket acceleration;  92.89 on Lap 1, 100.94 on Lap 2.  The best lap was lap 9 at 111.38.

The time was 33.64281.  On a hand watch it would have been 33.64, for speed of 107.01 MPH.

See? It can even cherry-pick the best half mile (8 laps) which was 109.632, only 2.6 MPH better than the acceleration speed.

I'm happy to hear that somebody new has a fast Perky.

I fiddled with my Apple I phone, which is a typical product.

The stopwatch function under "clock" will even do individual laps times, just like the top-of-the-line TransTrace.

In 1/2a proto dad use to act like he was fiddling with the needle valve then suddenly let the plane go. Good for 5 tenths with human timers.
