F-40 build, Pink Lady w/ K&B 6.5 RIRE
« on: July 27, 2017, 11:00:26 AM »
I found a used Tatone pan in my stash that was awfully close to fitting the K&B. I ground out the front to a larger diameter to fit the prop drive. I made a little clearance for the crankcase under the pan lugs.

More pics.... I think I can only do two at a time because of the size.

I faced off the top of the pan with a long bar sander. It was already close. Then I set it up with my pan jig and located the holes with a 1/16 mill. I need to stop by the local hardware shop and pick up another #37 bit so I can use 5-40 SHCS for mount bolts.

Dane, Now you need to get a ST G-21 .29 spinner assy. It can be made to fit and will be the right size. Sorry to say....... don't have a spare.  TS

PS   I used the K&B 'back in the day' . Last flown at the 87 nats. Blew both motors and never fixed 'em.

Got most of the wood parts in varying stages of rough cut-ed-ness. The pan is drilled and tapped. Only 40 or so more hours of sanding. Lol. I can kinda see a plane forming....

That's cool, thanks for the info at least. I'll be on the hunt.

I've heard that about this engine. I would like to think preemptively, I've replaced the rod that is the weak link. And I've got a large stock of engine parts somehow! Of course this engine is simply a place holder until I track down that nelson....  H^^

Lots of pics for what seems like little progress. One part done. It's on top, I guess it's the turtle deck? Lol backwards and upside-down planes....

Razor plane, then switched to long bar.

I shaped out the top and gaped out the bottom....

Now I need to punch out the bottom shell and mill out some maple. My crutch is too fat. I can set the router up and do it, but I guess I should have done this before gluing the maple and balsa floor together.

How are you going to bolt the pan to the airframe in the front?

I'm not quite to that point,  but I think I have a reasonable idea

I know you've got some work on it but I'd look for a better pan. Get one where you can put 2 bolts right behind the engine bearers then key into the top front and back like in the AMA rule book.

Thank you, I actually did not review that first. After reading the PDF, and measuring my pan engine mount surface, I am certain I can fit a 4-40 bolt on both sides on the rear of the engine bearer. Right behind the engine lug.

Here's some wood work from today. I'm very happy with how the cowl and crutch assembly are coming together. Like MM pointed out, I just need to make sure of a few things on the plans. I've got a little ahead of myself a few times on this build. Had to make adjustments.

Not a lot today, but I cleaned up the pan a little more, I noticed the front case bolts were still contacting the pan. Then I set up the fuse again and key-holed it for the engine. Just a little more mill work to make clearance for the front case bolts on the maple crutch.

Nice work Dane, it looks very clean.
A couple of ideas for you. Be sure that the main hold down bolts go through the wing spar to the pan. If not for any reason, add some bass to the wing so that they do. The nose tie down or key looks daunting in the ama book, but a simple way to do an equivalent is to have two stubs of piano wire 3/32? at either side of the nose of the pan. When the top is bolted down, the stubs fit into corresponding holes in the crutch. Easy and works great.

Thanks Ken. This pan looks like it had that style before, but I had to take out too much material from that area for my prop drive. I am thinking about embedding aluminium "keys" that will snug into the pan. Just to the sides of the front crank bearing block. The keys will be embedded in the crutch. Would that meet the code standard?

Here's pics of today's little victories.

Ok, I snuck in a little more. I thought my cowl was too small, but it turned out pretty good. Still lots of work ahead. Speaking of heads, I installed my flattened head clamp. I had Lee's machine shop take care of a few things for me, the head clamp being one.

And now that were back, a little more work on my "other" lady.....

I stuck some self adhesive sand paper to a pipe and used that to sand out my cowl. Worked pretty good.

Congratulations on your marriage!!   Sometimes it's not easy to keep a balance between family life and the modeling/creative activities. Probably speak for all that, over the past 50+ years, I have been working at it. Not always successfully!!  Cheers, TS

I found that 5-40's are rare and hard to find.
But 3mm is an upgrade from 4-40 that comes in all sizes and is easy to get.

Agree with Paul on the machine screws....3mm is about the same and much easier to find.
I have not seen th detail on your plan set. Pink Ladies has a chimney cowl that sucks air past the engine and out through the top of the cowling. All of mine have a good 1/16 or more clearance between the cowling and the engine (including the head) so air will suck out past the motor.

Paul not to discount the 3mm advice

BUT 5-40 is the common hardware for Cox .049 prop screws and easy to find in soft slotted screw, threaded rod, or Socket head hardened in a variety of lengths

hard to find...maybe...rare...not really

Hey Dane, congrats on the marriage.   My wife has put up with my planes and me going on 50 years.   Shen used to help me until the kids started coming along.   By the way I like the construction of the plane and make sure to tell the new bride how gorgeous she is. H^^

I know they use 'em for Cox .049 prop  bolts, but that's about all.  After some digging I got some.  But I can get 3mm in any size & style I need, no effort.

;D Bro Dane, please allow me to share and extend my congratulations to you and the Mrs.  My wife and I have laughed, loved, shared, argued, cried at times, and struggled for 40 years, come 10 September.  I can't speak for anyone else, because we are all different, but I attribute our wonderful life together to our shared love of the Lord and working to keep Him the head of our lives.  As the knuckleheaded guy that I am, it took some time for me to come to the understanding that I needed help, in many, many ways.  This may not be the place to share and say this but it is my sincere hope that as you walk through this wonderfully complex, hectic, frustrating yet exciting and challenging life together, you both, especially you, will wantingly pursue and draw your lives closer and closer to the service and will of the Lord and as the head and shepherd of your family/household teach and guide the lives of your wife and your children for their futures.

Congratulations and who knows maybe, someday, you too will join the fellows, like myself, in the fun filled conversation of "What the heck did I do to her now"!  ;D ;D ;D

I agreed with that for a while, but there's this hardware store / machine tool supply house that carries everything. It's all easy for me to get. I just used the 5-40's because that's what's on the plans. I'd like to replicate what Bill did before I try to modify anything.

No sir. I needed to finish some other projects. In fact one had been finished for a while, and I'm trying to figure out how to ship the darn thing. I do have all the parts shaped out on this one. I just need to make the wing tube lead out's
