AMECO'S SCAT - What is known on this plane? Any still active
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:12:56 AM »
Hi,

I picked up a kit of one of these for a song this past weekend. It looks like a big long Perky from the box art. (Or baseball bat in the box in kit form) I dont think its complete but I am fairly certain its close, for having both ends of the box blown out. Neat and shows the level of construction that was left to the builder in that day compared to the world of laser cut parts today.

The box top says Class B and C. I am still pretty green so I have no idea what size motor that referes to. I am curious as to what period this plane is from. It looks old.

Any information would be appreciated.

Mark

Again Mark,  the speed section in the rules will tell you the different classes of speed and engine size limits.  I myself have not heard of the stated kit.  But, in the old days that was the supreme way of making kits.  Blocks of wood halfway shaped with a set of drawings.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday

PS:Guess I am getting senile in my old age.  Hope I don't upset you.  jeh

Thanks Doc,  Will do.

I will post some pics of this kit this week. Its a pretty interesting unit. A real brick on the weight.. but thats probably on purpose.

Mark,

In the good old days Class B  was a .29 and Class C was a .49. For what it's worth, Class A was a .19 and Class D was a .65. The current rules are a bit different.

P.S. In the very beginning it was Class 1 thru 6 but that didn't last too long.

Appears to be for an O&R engine.
The intake is in the wrong place for the O&Rs I have.
Might be earlier than mine are.

Hey David,

Pretty wild looking log hey. ???...

Any guesses on the age?

Apparently, even though I dont see any ignition on this engine in the plans thats what they ran. There is mention of a coil and battery although no provisions in the plans for the mounting of.

Thoughts are on a build up are that the top and bottom should have fasteners to take the plane apart Clam Shell style for maint etc. Wing and Stab stay with the top portion. Bellcrank, Gear, Engine stay with the bottom of the fuse. Just like a speed plane with a pan.

I know that I mentioned that this looks like a stretched perky however my neighbor purchased a kit that is Exactly like a stretched Perky. I will get some photos of that plane to share as well.

The model is from about 1946 to 1949, if you post this in "Oldtime Stunt" you will get more information. This is an ignition model as the plan shows the Condenser. You opened the fuselage to get to the batteries in order to change them, they would be in the bottom half and a switch would be located in the side. While Ameco did not last to long Johnnie Cashburn went on to have his own successful company for many years.
Several years ago I use to produce the Ameco Trainer, a profile ignition model, and now we make a few of the old designs, Perky, GloBug and Tethered Trainer.

Great info thanks,

I take it that no one knows of any of these planes that are complete and or flying?

The engine shown is an Ohlsson 60 sideport. This kit predates the O&R front rotary conversions and glow plugs by some years. Probably would have flown about 70 to 75 mph with the O&R at best. A good Atwood Champion would have added about 15 mph to that. I would guess kitted in 1946. Very slim chance you could find one of these today.
