AMA Electric Speed
« on: August 17, 2025, 04:50:15 PM »
Does anyone fly or take seriously the AMA electric speed events? It seems that with todays modern technology right on the shelf, this could become quite popular with the proper exploitations.

FAI has that 52' line that screws you into the ground plus to compete you have to fly to Austrialia on your own dime. Good luck to the team.

How about some good old home grown USA electric speed flying. The event is pretty much wide open except for batt voltage and the line size. Familiar 2 line system and 65 ft quite manageable turn rate. What do you think.

Individual battery cells can be of any commercially available chemistry type, and
must be a rechargeable type.

General Specifications
The use of gear boxes and multiple motors is permitted. Folding props are not
permitted. No electrical power may be transmitted through the control lines. The
use of radio control is not permitted. All applicable sections of Control Line
General and Control Line Speed shall govern model and line construction and the
timing of flights. There shall be no loading requirements for Electric Speed
models.

Class A Control Line Speed For event 334
Any motor(s) allowed but the battery pack is limited to a maximum of 8.4 volts
nominal of any battery type.
The model must successfully pass a 36G pull test prior to flight.
The flight speed will be calculated based on the six (6) laps of the circuit
following two complete laps in the pylon. To compute the speed in miles per hour
for A Speed, use the formula: MPH = 1670.76/average time in seconds.
Two (2) control lines, ASTM A228 solid steel, shall be used and they shall be a
minimum of 65 feet long. Multi strand lines are not permitted. The minimum
diameter of each line shall be .016 inches. Maximum model weight shall be 30 oz.
The CD will determine whether hand launches are permitted.

F2A and F2G line length ain't 52' my friend.  Where do you get you have to go to Australia to compete in F2G?  PLENTY of opportunity in Europe and coming soon to USA.

Ok, 58' same problem, shorter that 65'. Would f2g be legal for AMA on longer lines? wait, I guess not one has 26V 6 cell batt, no wonder they spin so fast.

Is Howard Doering or William Stewart still around. I saw some old posts from them about Espeed.

Who sells a 8.4v 45c lippo?

Standard Lipo sizes are 3.7. 7.4, 11.1, etc, in multiples of 3.7 per cell.  But when fully charged, they over-achieve.  So a well charged 7.4v would go to 8.4v or better.

You have plenty of official AMA speed events (Perky, Fox Speed, .21 Proto and Sport Jett are unofficial) from 1/2A Proto/1/2A Speed, F2A, A, B, .21, C, F40, D and Jett.

Speed flyers should support current official AMA events.

10 Official and 4 unofficial AMA events, plus 2 Electric Speed events (A&B). I've never understood the desire to fly unofficial events when you have 10 Official events covering every possible displacement and discipline. And add another 2 Electric speed events to the mix.

I guess I am a Speed purest; let's stick to the traditional speed events... if you're going to fly speed, step up to the plate and fly real speed events, not watered down versions IMO.

The unofficial events are less expensive and more accessable for local contests. I still have my .09 diesel powered Mercury Midge.
