Title: 1/2 A Speed plane
Post by: RK on January 12, 2018, 08:06:54 PM
I am scratch building a 1/2 A speed plane for the first time and plan on using a stock 049 Tee Dee for power. Since I have no experience with Speed Plane's or the Tee Dee  :o I am wondering what is the smallest size tank I can use to get about 15 laps on 35 or 40 ft. lines. I am building a built up fuse & its only 1/2" wide. I plan on opening the fuse 3/8" &  letting the rest of the tank extend out the side.

The design is from the Desert Rat from the Outerzone which ran with a 35 size engine, I have played fast & loose to bring it down to 1/2 A size!  /DV

Can anyone give me an idea of how many oz. of fuel it would need ? Brodak has several tanks from 1/3rd oz up.

Also if anyone has a 049 Tee Dee for sale please let me know!

Thanks for your help, RK Flyer

This one is almost tricky to answer. 1/4 oz is 8cc which is standard on hot engines. But, that's still a lot of flight time. In my 1/2a proto, I run 12cc. Of course, that's a higher performance CS. So minimum I would try is the 1/4. I guess you could short tank it if it's too much for 15 laps. I got some td's laying around. If you wanna pm me your number.

I would go with a 1/2 ounce to be on the safe side.  Maybe you should just time it on the bench.

That being said, on my Perkys, which use 15's, they burn more fuel & run less time in the air.
So you will need to run longer on the bench than your target air time.

9 CC's  should be plenty for the TD, u are using pressure right??

if u are going to start it and then fly it u might need more .

as someone said u could make the tank a little bigger and then short tank it

Thank you all for your help!!   :D

I am going to start with a 7 cc tank that I have & then go larger if necessary. The Contest I am building this for is only 12 laps & very informal. I am running a stock 049 Tee Dee.
