A great idea but it violates "Rule 8. Pyrotechnics:" on page SC-3 of the AMA Competition Regulations, Control Line & Radio Control Fixed Wing Scale.

What about landing? Not mentioned in the video. #^

the rocket pack was dropped shortly after launch. landing was as per a normal take-off. the system was never put into use.

That's evident in the video. Much was made of being able to launch the fighter where there was no airfield, however, you have to recover the airplanes somewhere, then get them back to wherever the launcher is. If there is a runway to land them on, then you don't need the launcher.
Sure looked like it must be fun to do, nice axial roll on the climbout, too.

I'd use the highway myself. I big dry lake bed would do well too. It was the Nevada desert.
