Title: Top Flight "Standoff Scale" P-51 Mustang
Post by: Mark Romanowitz on July 29, 2017, 12:35:20 AM
Every now and then a Top Flite standoff scale P-51B Mustang (Don Gentile's Shangri-La) kit shows up on eBay.

As a platform from which to build for Sport Scale are these kits worth anything? Or are there too many obstacles to overcome to be worthwhile, such as airfoil empennage and outline issues?

I think you are likely to suffer in the static score. At one point I was flying a Top Flite "Gold Edition" P-40 and got low static scores. On the other hand, it flew very well. The Gold Edition models were better in terms of scale outline than the "Red Box" series. The wood in an old kit might be in pretty nasty shape too. Finding a kit these days is problematic. If you come across anything from Brian Taylor plans, it will be very accurate in outline. I have been flying his Typhoon with considerable success. Too bad Traplet just closed it's doors. Skyshark is open again. I have converted their Val. It flies very well. Probably because of the airfoil which is too thick. Other than that, the only major scale deviation I found was that the nose had been extended.
Good luck,
Chuck Snyder

I would agree with Chuck the outlines on some of the older kits have been modified, I think the Kyosho B-29 when I last checked moved the entire wing aft from the scale location to get the CG right. When I checked the plans against a 3-view the length and span checked out but the nose was too long and the tail was too short. A large portion of your score is related to the outline so you have to pick the right 3-view.
