Title: Proxy flying in 1/2A scale
Post by: bob whitney on August 04, 2014, 08:58:01 AM

i am going to throw this out there to see what everyone thinks.

this year at the nats one of our elder statesmen Frank Beatty  got dizzy flying his 1/2A and fell down  at Tucson and St Louis the two hot beds of 1/2A scale proxy flying is allowed ..i know that Frank doesn't like to fly 1/2a as they are too quick  .the last time i was at S/L i flew his plane for him .

we have a few of our long time scale builders are getting up in age  seeing that 1/2A's fly 10 level laps for points i would like to see proxy flyers allowed for flyers that don't think they can fly the 1/2A's this is supposed to be a fun event and we don't want to loose anyone  what are your thoughts

We would have to look at the Proposed rules for 1/2a scale on the AMA website. The new proposed rules make 1/2a scale an AMA sanctioned event... I don't know the answer to this but does the new rules make proxy flying allowable? The 2015 Nats will probably use the AMA official rules if they are adopted by the AMA

Just so we're clear: the Tucson "1/2A" (1cc) Profile Scale rules are independent, having nothing whatsoever to do with the proposed AMA rules.  Contact me at vsc-guy(at)cox(dot)net for an email copy of the Tucson rules.

Yes, we allow proxy flying.  Must make your own arrangements with a local flyer, and ship everything except fuel.  Proxy flyer(s) must be same age or younger.  Builders who are onsite may, with CD's permission, elect to have a proxy flyer if physically unable to compete.

This year's meet is scheduled for October 11-12.  Static judging on Sat., official flights on Sun.

Bob, I seem to recall this coming up this past year. I am in favor of it, and this is something we will allow at the FCM contest. If it is not in the 1/2A rules we could allow it at next years Nats. What do all you think?

Proxy flying in speed (Perky) and 1/2a scale events has allowed folks who can't fly to enter a contest. We have people entering CL speed contests today that are not physically able to fly but are able to compete since they have proxy pilot fly the model.

I think it should be allowed to have a proxy pilot be allowed to fly in 1/2a scale, the club rules that are in use today allow proxy pilots so I don't think the new rules being proposed should be any different.

i am just looking at this for 1/2A as there is not much except fly level and land   full scale is more like stunt where u can make up lots of points  and i feel the builder should fly his own plane   perky again is just fly level

I hated seeing Frank go down and would definitely support proxy flying in 1/2 A!  As said above, ain't much to do to gain flying points with the 1/2a ships.

Proxy flying is definitely a good thing for 1/2A.  However how well it flies does affect the points.  I  understand that at one contest that someone took a Brodak twin Mustang and won by doing a bunch of stunts.

Gentlemen
Proxy flying is allowed for CL Scale.

Please read the AMA Competition Rules, General Information all categories, Page 10, Paragraph 8.  Note that CL Scale is not exempted like CL Combat, CL Aerobatics and CL Navy Carrier are.

They created TEAM SCALE for people who can't build and fly.  Also high static awards for the builder who can't fly.

Modeling is building AND flying.  Keep it like the National Baseball League - batting and fielding.

Will CL be promoted by a rule that keeps the same people winning even longer?

Gee, Paul, I did not realize that my high static award at the Nats was because I could not fly. I did fly in the event. In fact, if one would not fly, you would not receive any score, let alone high static. High static was part of my bucket list, but now that I have learned that it was given to me out of sympathy, I think I will throw the plaque away.

Thanks Jim,  some people just don't learn.    Congrats on your high point award and hang it were everyone can see it.   Too bad Mother Nature had to interfere with the NATS.
