Paint question F2A Brewster Buffalo

  D>K  The F2A Brewster is out of the paint booth. (primer) I will start wet sanding tomorrow.

Help on this part of the painting process.
On the clear coat I plan to use the two part automotive clear,(can't use dope because I use 15% nitro) but it needs to be a flat not a gloss coat. All you paint experts out there, I need your help on this one. HOW TO MAKE IT FLAT.

Mix in corn starch? Has anyone else heard of doing this? I thought I had read this at some point.

Allen,

I've never sprayed a clear coat with a look of "flat."

Being a Warbird, I would shoot the clear then use steel wool on it. Mask off and make panels. Etch in different directions?

You can purchase a "flattening agent" that is mixed with paint.

You could bring a jar to a body Shop and ask for an ounce. You'll only need a few drops.

You could use automotive "color" paints that are one stage.

I'm pretty sure Klass Kote sells flattening agent. I'm guessing it is barium sulfate. You might also check with your auto paint supplier.

I dont know about other brands, but PPG uses a product called IIRC Flexed and flat. Its a clear product that you add to your un-catalized clear before you mix it. Something on the ratio of equal parts clear and Flattening agent. They also sell a premixed flattening clear that you catalyze and spray however that does not allow you to adjust the ratio of how flat , semigloss, or satin you want the finished product.
I would NOT recommend randomly mixing anything with a urethane clear.

 Flat and/or satin finishes are very popular in the Hot Rod world these days, have been for a while now. I think most of the quality paint jobs are actually done using regular paint and then they get finished with a satin clearcoat. With that in mind, I'd have to assume that any knowledgeable automotive paint supplier should be able to set you up with compatible products for you to do a flat finish.

 ...don't forget to tell them that your camouflage painting your Buffalo and see what kind of look you get. ;D

The clear will mix; 4 parts clear. 1 part activator. 1 part flattner.

The reason that is so hard to flatten a buffalo is because they are so big. A regular passenger car won't do it. You need a really big truck, or possibly a freight train, in order to flatten a buffalo.
