Scale at The Brodak...
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:57:33 PM »
I went to Carmichaels with 16 airplanes to enter 13 events.  I ended up using 11 planes to fly the 13 events, loaned out 3 planes and didn't use 2. Didn't wreck any.  I also left the camera in the car didn't take on single picture at the contest. SO I took a few while I was unpacking.

As with carrier, I don't have full report, mostly just my own stuff when from when I got home.

FUN Scale.

First, Tim LaNore, PT-19, 110 points (99.25)

Second, George Marenka, B-17, 110 points (99.00)

Fourth, Ed Mason, 96.50

I got 99.5 with my little SPAD XIII for third place.  I forgot a stunt on my second attempt, but would still have been in third by a closer margin. The marks for both static and flying were generous to put it mildly.

This was a zero-investment operation until the day before this year's event.  The plane was won a contest in Chicago, circa 1983, the engine was surplus, as was the covering.  I wrecked the lines flying carrier the day before and had to spend $17.95 for some new ones.

SPORT SCALE

I hope I got this right.  I'm having a hard time reading my own scribbled notes.

1st - Charlie Bauer - Islander - 175.50
2nd - George Marenka - PT-17 - 165.5 (better second flight)
3rd - Frank Beatty - biplane - 165.5
4th - Paul Smith - PB-2A - 160.50

PROFILE SCALE

1st - Paul Smith - Bearcat - 175.50
2nd - Bill Avera - 172.25
3rd - Charlie Bauer - Constellation - 156.5
4th - John Vlna - 147.0

Last year, I felt that I had enough static points to win either event, but ran into similar throttle problems in both and didn't place in either.  This year I got the Bearcat purring perfectly, but again made the same mistake twice on the PB-2A.  Namely, having the engine quit on the taxi lap, thereby losing 10 points on the taxi lap and another 10 on throttle ops (assuming I got full marks).    Charlie loaned me a 3-blader to try and help solve the issue, but if only got me from 2/3 of a lap to 3/4.  Another 1/4 lap and it would have made a nice sportsmanship story at the awards.

Which model? The SPAD or the Bearcat?

I hope the Bearcat doesn't look funny, I spent a month rehabbing it this winter.

The SPAD was refinished four years ago and the fuselage IS getting a bit faded and fuel-soaked. Plus, the judges are starting to get sick of looking at it. In an effort to retire it, I added a lazy eight and inverted to my flight routine, but it survived

The SPAD and the Bearcat both look great!  The SPAD really comes to life with the detail, fuel soaked or not.  #^

Paul,
There was one error in the scores you posted, In sport scale George Marenka flew a PT-17, and in Fun scale a B-17.

OK, I changed the Sport Scale.  The Fun was what you said to begin with.  With seven events closing out on Saturday morning, things get a bit hectic.

I noticed two or maybe three B-17's on the field.  Did only one take a prize?

As far as I know only George's B-17 placed, The other two looked good but did not fly as well.
