Here are a few pics of my 1/2A Scale P-61 Black Widow.I blew up a 3 view and started tracing. The fuse, booms and wings are built up to save the poundage.27.5 span,130 sq. wing area.2 AP Wasp .061's for power.Should be close to 15 oz. RTF.I got bit hard by the scale bug at the Nats and got busy........

A few more shots
-
The primer blushed badly. It was bone dry when I sprayed the black and it still bled thru. All better now........
-
Working on the LG detail. The tiny stuff sure is a pain in the arthritis........
-
Jeff,
They don't have to big big to be beautiful.
You did a great job. Gotta love a scratch build design. H^^
Great photos also.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanx Charles!
A couple pics of the landing gear detail I finished up today. The brake lines are on the 3 view and these can clearly be seen at 5 feet.A couple small details still have to be done after the clear death paint.............where's my fresh air mask??

Jeff,
That's a real killer!
Small details do make a difference. You have gear doors and all!
What's next!

Hey Jeff, been trying to call, get error messages, been trying to email, same results. How 'bout a call or E so we can reconnect?
The old home phone is no longer since my moving to Wauseon, so call the cell. The email stays the same.
Great lookin' ship there, buddy, keep up the great work! (And just wait 'til you see my new guitar shop!!! Wow!)
-
That's awesome! You should bring it out to Phoenix the end of October.
-
Way cool Jeff, looks great! y1
I'm curious though, I don't recall ever seeing a P-61 with invasion stripes, do you have documentation showing it?
-
Nice model, Jeff. One of my favorites.

I picked up a book with a lot of great photos and color plates.I did a bunch of research and learned a ton about the design.Quite impressive!!!Take off over a 50' obsticle with a full load in 1,700' feet.

That is looking awesome. Hope she flies well for you. H^^

Jeff,
Really nice work.
The 125 sq. in. will carry the 15 - 16 oz. quite comfortably. The two Wasps will really make the thing zip around unless you calm them down or use throttles.
Like Jim Roselle suggested, take it to the Phoenix contest in October. An alternative is that you could have it proxy flown. (There are several "competent" fliers there that would do justice for your work.) Proxy flown models at that contest (previously in Tucson) have placed previously. It is small enough, it could be shipped fairly easily. Greyhound is reliable and relatively cheap.

I think there is an article in the current Smithsonian Air and Space magazine on the Widow. I have it with me here in Paducah and hope to read it this weekend.
Type at you later,

Me Tooo #^ #^ You might see it next week!

i hope you can make it down to the FCM, bro', maybe I'll have a 1/2A scale contest just for you and just you! LL~
Seriously, I hope to see a bunch of old cronies next weekend; I MISS the contests and the guys and gals. Once this honeymoon and moving and building a new shop is out of the way, maybe I can get back to flying again!
I am committed to the FCM weekend, though. I need the time away from this crazy moving thing! HB~> HB~>

Dunno, Doc. I remarried in April. After 51 years with the most incredible person on this earth, I couldn't stand being alone and God sent this old friend from many years ago into my life and we fell in love. Now we've moved, and I'm building a new 30 X 40 shop. We live right across the road from a hospital - ideal for a couple old folks, dontcha think?

It's strange. There are many P-38 planes in museums, but I don't think any P-61.
One nice thing about that model: you don't have to mess with complicated paint schemes!

It is ready for the engines,tanks,wheels.......I have 2 new Brodak .049's I could use instead of the Wasps. It'll save almost 1/2 an ounce.I'm thinkin'.........
-
Go with the Wasp's, the Brodaks are totally gutless. y1
-
Don't want gutless.I want single engine performance. The 1/2A twins I judged at the Nats this year were WAY BEHIND the power curve when one of the engines quit.
-
Super cool plane!
-
She's ready to fly #^ #^.I ended up using the 061's.Took some time last weekend and got them broken in nicely. Those little buggers REALLY scream!!!It weighs in at 15.2 oz. without fuel.I'm hoping to shave off another 1/2 oz, when I get the wheels on I ordered for it.I have old Perfect HEAVY wheels on it now,at least I can test fly it.I'll post pics of the finished project soon.
-
Just make sure it's balanced, those straight leading edge models aren't very forgiving to aft cg and 15 oz is plenty light for straight and level. You'll be so glad you used the .061's. It made all of the difference on my son's P-38. It weighs a pound too, flies great. Bob Whitely has an F-82 with .061's and it weighs about 14 oz and he loops it easily.

Any pics of the finished Spider? ;D
-
Just so happens...............I took these this afternoon. The new wheels and fuel tubing should be in Thursday.Hope to fly this weekend.I have 52' and 45' .012 cables to fly it with.Hopefully I can get it sorted out by the NASA Scale Classic.
-
Jeff, very nice. Cant wait to see it in the air. Are you going to the NSC in Waynesburg?
I hope to have my twin ready by then. Roger and I will be there a couple days early, staying with John Brodak.
Again, good job.
Blessings

Allen,Thanx! After some unexpected truck repairs it will be hard on the budget but I am planning on attending.Hope to have a fun scale ship ready to go as well.Frank Beatty showed me how he attached the flying wires on his 1/2A bipes and I used his method to attach the radio antenna.I am pleased with the way it turned out and hopefully it shows up at 5 feet.Going to see Will's new house later this week and I am taking my documentation and the airplane and let him give it the "Static" once over.Starting with a 3 view and creating something from scratch sure has been more fun and rewarding than I thought it would ever be............I'm gonna need a bigger truck!!
-
Looks great! y1
-
Finally got to take the bird to it's first contest.Brodak 2017.Flies like a dream!
-
Congrats on the wins/trophies.
-
Ha!! I get to say "I told you so" pard. And my prediction on the static results was spot on, also, right? Hey, those who aren't building, are kabitsing on the sidelines. That's me.
Do you intend to fly it at the nats? Ya better or I'll haunt you. y1 y1 #^ #^
-
Congrats Jeff, nice job. y1
-
Will,Muncie is in my plans. My static score was 77.5 out of a possible 80 and John Brodak showed me a couple things to fix in my info pack to possibly improve on that.Looking forward to the Nats and future scale builds.1/2A Spruce Goose might be a bit much.............
-
NO!!! It wouldn't be too much! I have a couple of new 1/2A motors you can borrow if you need more. #^ #^
-
We hook another one, scale that is.
Congrats Jeff, that landing locked the win in. Great job, and yes you should get nerves before hand, I still do. n~
Blessings
Allen
Coming over to Muncie for our stunt contest this weekend?
-
Allen,Hooked for sure!Hope to have a Fun Scale soon so I can learn throttle control and calling manuvers.Want to have it flying by the Scale Classic.I don't think my knees will be recovered from all the walking at Brodak by this weekend.See ya at the Nats,Trax
