CL Scale left alone?
« on: October 10, 2009, 11:50:24 AM »
Hello Pilots

OK, I know i am a beginner at this Cl Scale stuff but why in the heck is
CL Scale National Championships all by itself on July 31,2009.???

All the other events are held together on July 5-10 , 2009

This makes no sense at all  !!!

I am very enterested because i plan on being at the 2010 NATS for CL
Scale with model in hand and flying with you guy's.  Not to mention
My wifes two week vacation starts on July 1.  But that really does not
mater here.  It is that a great event is being left all by itself.  That
does matter because there are some that would be at the NATS as a
spectater and see CL Scale and say hey i really like that................
No wonder CL Scale is having such a hard time to get more people
interested.

Control Line is being recognized at this very moment all over the United
States and i would hate to see CL Scale left out.  I am really excited
about getting into this sport.  I have a new shop and lots of time on my
hands to do this event every year.  Is there anything i can do to help
CL Scale be more organized????       Bryan H. ??? S?P D>K

This morning i was going over the contestant information and seen
this, I don't mean to make anyone mad but it sure seems kind of
weird.
I live in a big city and alot of there events are held together so they
each have a chance at population and gross event moneys.  It is
better for the event in more ways than one.

Bryan,
The events at the Nats are run by the special interest groups--not AMA management. The SIG for C/L scale is the National Association of Scale Aeromodelers. They run C/L scale at the same time as R/C scale. I rather suspect (having been the NASA rep to the Nats planning once) that R/C subsidizes the cost of putting on the C/L event. Judges, an indoor site for static judging, etc, cost money. There has been the suggestion that R/C and C/L scale events be scheduled at the beginning or end of C/L week so more C/L people would attend. It was this way many years ago. Scheduling all the events at the Nats is a major problem, one of the biggest items is lodging in Muncie for all the competitors.

That's the deal. If a bunch of people wanted it changed they would have to put together a plan, with resources, and present it to the Nats planning committee.

Ok , I see.  I am a member of the National Association of Scale Aeromodelers and i
did not even know that.  Of course i've only been a member a year.  That reminds
me i need to renew my membership.

Chuck , When you first entered your first NATS  How did you do?

Bryan,
When I entered my first Nats, I was about 14 or 15 and flew combat and Navy carrier. I did poorly. But had a great time at Glenview Naval Air Station.

Oh--I bet you were refering to C/L scale. That happened 40-some years later. First entry was a deHavilland Hornet in Profile scale. I had not gotten very good at flying it and probably just did OK. After I learned to properly fly it I did win first at the Nats at least once. It was actually my 3rd C/L scale model and I had been flying at a lot of local contests. I learned a lot with those other models.

Thanks Chuck, I did not mean to come off smart or anything earlyer.
I was trying to sign up for the blogs here but it would not register.
Now i kinda get what the blogs are for.

By the way im just a crippled up 43 year old that is a real nice guy.
My wife said i should get outside more so i joined an RC club 4
years ago and here i am.
Scale has really caught my eye.  Right now i have a good friend who
is helping me fly better at the club.

Bryan
Welcome to Control Line Scale.  I entered my first CL Scale contest in 1982 with a Sig RC Cessna 150 quick built converted to CL with electronics control.  Finished last but that was to be expected.

My next contest was at the 1983 NATS and had the 4th highest static score but two brand new engines held me back and I finished in 12th place out of 24 entries in Sport Scale.  My P-38 model was featured in the March 1986 Model Aviation.

Two years later I earned my first NATS trophy, 4th place CL FAI Scale flying a C-7A Caribou.  It earned two more NATS trophies before I re-kitted it at the 1988 NATS trying to improve from 2nd to 1st in FAI Scale.

Chuck and I were two of the 4 judges for this years CL Scale NATS.

Wow what an exciting journey .  I recieved your e-mail and understand now the
reason CL Scale has it's own Contest week.   Thanks for the information.

I have just copyed and printed evrything i could from AMA Competition Regulations
2009-2010 Control Line & RC.  I have also did the same with NASA Control Line
Scale.  I will be sure to study it all and read all the contest information.

Soon i will place an order for a Multi-Channel electronics unit , Ive heard they work
real well.  Thanks again for the help   Bryan H^^

I have heard that there is not enough room to operate all of the radio frecuencies for RC scale with all of the other RC events being run. It's too bad the RC scale and CL scale is left on it's own, if you happen to fly CL carrier and CL scale you are left with making two trips or dropping out of one event and only make one trip.

If they could somehow figure out how to bring the scale portion back with all of the other events that would help. I an considering flying at Brodaks contest instead of the Nats because I can do several events instead of just CL scale. Brodak is a longer drive hower....

Actually, there isn't all that much pavement at Muncie.  Stunt, Speed, and Racing "own" the three concrete venues and it might be hard to shoe horn in, unless Scale was run on the weekend after the other events are done.

I'm all for moving it to the CL Nats in July, but pavement is a genuine issue.
