Good size for 049 twin?
« on: June 12, 2021, 06:46:20 PM »
What's a good size for a 1/2-A scale twin, to fly on a pair of Golden Bee engines (actually twin-bypass production engines, but Golden Bee-ish power output).

Brodak's twin is 156 sq in so the 200 sq in is a good number.  The bid problem with a 1/2A twin is to keep it light.

During the several years that the 1/2A Multi-Engine Profile Scale contest was held in Tucson/Phoenix. there seemed to be a trend for the more successful models to have the models designed around 100 to 120 sq in per engine for the Norvel .061 engines and around 100 sq in for the Cox engines, or maybe slightly smaller for the Cox Babe Bee engines.  That parameter even worked for the 4-engine Bear (400+ sq in and 60 oz) and the 3-engine Mistel (Ju 88 + Bf 109).

Mr. Tim,
Have you picked your plane yet? What are you trying to model?

I'm a sucker for twins, so I pulled every twin on Outerzone, HPA, And AeroFred. I also have the Black Hawk Models Electra L-10 in hand. My next twin will be a bit larger at 36", but it is the Frog Mosquito and will bear a pair of Medallion .09s. Then I'll tackle the Electra, but may visually modify it as a B-25 Mitchell.

From there, my next scratch built twin will be either a 1/2A Twin by DMECO (on OZ), or the Duellist MKIII 1/2, or the CG JR. Skylark.

Douglas Y1B-7.  There's not much material I can find on it, but I have a 3-view I found somewhere on the web, and some photos.

There's a good chance it'll never get past the plans stage, but what the heck -- I'm having fun.

Is there a prize for ugliest plane ever made?

The Farman F.4X is a definite contender.

Looking at the wing, I just want to know if Peanut Scale rules demand that you have all the props spinning.

Tim,

I do not know anything about Peanut Scale rules.  Peanut Scale is evidently not an official AMA event, there is nothing in the AMA rule book about them, outdoor or indoor.

Regarding that Farman:  When the 1/2A Multi-Engine Profile Scale contests were held in Tucson, a special award was given to the best "Slab" constructed model.  This was for the best appearing model that was constructed with nothing more than 1/4" sheet except for the engine nacelles.  So I built such a thing based on this Farman F.4X thing.  Three Cox 0.020 engines.  It lost out to a nicely done 3-engine Bellanca 28-92 Trimotor.

Yup.  So it'd depend on where you are and who's running the contest.

Tim,

Thanks.

An interesting thing about this Farman.  Many articles on the full size aircraft put in the category as one of the ugliest airplanes built.  In 1/2A profile, it really does not look so bad.  Maybe it is so ugly, it is "cute" in 1/2 A profile form which is probably not the best descriptor.
